Ernest Milton
Ernest Milton (7 August 1897 – 2 September 1984) was an English footballer who played as a left or right back for Sheffield United in The Football League. Born in Kimberworth near Rotherham, he also had a spell for Kilnhurst Town as well as guesting for Birmingham, Rotherham County and Barnsley during World War I. Career Milton played youth football with Parkgate Christ Church, and started his playing career, while working as a miner, with Kilnhurst Town. He was with Kilnhurst at the outbreak of World War I but was recommended to Sheffield United. Having impressed in a trial, Milton joined United as an amateur in 1917, aged 20. He played regularly during the war, and occasionally appeared as a guest player for Birmingham, Rotherham County and Barnsley. With the war over, Milton was offered a professional contract with Sheffield United, but despite playing the first game of the 1918–19 season he left United claiming he had 'signed by misinterpretation'. Kimberworth
Kimberworth is a suburb of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It is located in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, about 2.2 miles (3.5 km) north-west of Rotherham town centre and 4.7 miles (7.6 km) north-east of the City of Sheffield. History Kimberworth is mentioned in the 1086 ''Domesday Book'', where it is noted as "Chiberworde". Kimberworth castle, now demolished, was located near The Drawbridge pub. The monks at nearby Kirkstead Abbey were smelting iron from around 1160, the rest of the history of this area is heavily influenced by industrial developments, especially in iron, steel and coal. There is evidence of human activity in this area going back 5000 years. The area was settled by Brigantes, before the arrival of the Romans. The Roman expansion north was halted by the Brigantes forts at Kimberworth and Wincobank. Len Birks
Leonard Birks (6 October 1896 – 22 March 1975) was an English footballer who played as a defender. Born in Fenton, Staffordshire he started his career with Port Vale before spending seven years at Sheffield United. After leaving Bramall Lane he played for Plymouth Argyle, Bristol City and Yeovil & Petters United, as well as having a spell as first team coach at Bristol City. Career Birks joined Port Vale from Butt Lane Star in May 1920. He made his Second Division debut in 1920–21, but remained a fringe player in 1921–22, despite lifting the North Staffordshire Infirmary Cup in 1922. However, he missed just one game of the 1922–23 campaign, and was an ever-present in 1923–24. He retained his first team place in the highly successful 1924–25 season, but with dependable young left-back Jimmy Oakes waiting in the reserves to take his place, manager Joe Schofield decided to cash in on Birks. Albert Milton
Albert Milton MM (1885 – 11 October 1917) was an English footballer who played for Sunderland as a full back. He fought in the First World War and was killed at Battle of Passchendaele, Passchendaele while serving with the Royal Field Artillery in October 1917. Club career Albert began his career at South Kirkby Colliery F.C., South Kirkby before joining neighbours Barnsley F.C., Barnsley for £50. After just one season at Oakwell Albert was sold by Barnsley to Sunderland in April 1908 for the then maximum transfer fee of £350, Albert made his debut on 9 September 1908 in a 3–0 win against Middlesbrough F.C., Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park.
