Ernest M. Ettinger
Ernest Milton Ettinger was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Hants East in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1949 to 1953, and 1956 to 1962. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Born in 1888 at Portland, Maine, Ettinger was a funeral director. In 1928, he started his own business, Ettinger Funeral Home in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. He married Margaret MacKenzie. Ettinger entered provincial politics in the 1949 election, winning the Hants East riding by 28 votes over Liberal incumbent Robert A. MacLellan. In the 1953 election, after leading on election night, a recount resulted in Ettinger losing by one vote to Liberal Alfred E. Reid. Ettinger appealed to the Supreme Court citing irregularities, and the election was voided in February 1954. 1956 Nova Scotia General Election
The 1956 Nova Scotia general election was held on 30 October 1956 to elect members of the 46th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservatives led by Robert Stanfield. This was the first election the Liberals had fought after the death of their longtime charismatic leader, Angus L. Macdonald. Public Health Minister Harold Connolly became interim leader and premier following Macdonald's death in 1954, but was defeated at a leadership convention by Education Minister Henry Hicks. The convention exposed a sharp religious divide in the Liberal Party; Hicks was a Protestant and Connolly was a Catholic. Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia
Shubenacadie () is a village located in Hants County, in central Nova Scotia, Canada. As of 2021, the population was 411. The name for the Mi'kmaw territory in which present-day Shubenacadie is located and the origin of its name is the Mi'kmaw word ''Sipekne'katik'', which "place abounding in groundnuts" or "place where the wapato grows." Historically, the Sipekne'katik region was a large stretch of territory that covered central Nova Scotia. History Father Louis-Pierre Thury sought to gather the Mi'kmaq of Peninsular Nova Scotia into a single settlement around Shubenacadie as early as 1699. Not until the Dummer's War between the New France-aligned Wabanaki Confederacy and English New England from 1722–1725, however, did Antoine Gaulin, a Quebec-born missionary, erect a permanent mission at Shubenacadie (adjacent to Snides Lake and close to the former Residential school).
