Dälek () (stylized in all lowercase) is an American experimental hip hop group formed in Newark, New Jersey in 1998. The group's current lineup consists of MC dälek (vocals and producer) and Mike Manteca (aka Mike Mare) (electronics and producer). History The group originated in the New Jersey DIY scene of the mid-1990s, based around a studio lineup of Dälek (Will Brooks), Oktopus (Alap Momin), and Joshua Booth. Brooks had won a scholarship at college, used it to buy an MPC3000 and dropped out to become a full-time musician and formed Dälek with Momin, who encouraged him to name the group after his stage name "like Van Halen". Ian F Svenonius is an American musician and singer of various Washington, D.C.-based punk bands including Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Weird War, XYZ, Escape-ism, and Chain and the Gang. Between his numerous projects, Svenonius has released more than 22 full-length albums and over 20 singles, EPs, and splits. A published author and online talk show host, Svenonius' projects share a tongue-in-cheek, radical left political ideology. His first band, Nation of Ulysses, which released its first record in 1990, was highly influential in the punk scene but dissolved in 1992. Smart Went Crazy was an American rock band from Washington, D.C. History Smart Went Crazy was formed by high school students, Chad Clark (guitar and vocals), Abram Goodrich (bass) and Hilary Soldati (cello and vocals). Following graduation the band expanded to include Jeff Boswell (guitar) and Tony Dennison (drums). Smart Went Crazy released their debut, ''Cubbyhole EP'', in 1994. This was independently released through their own label, CozyDisc. Black Lips is an American garage rock band from Atlanta, Georgia formed in 1999. History The band formed in Dunwoody, Georgia after guitarist Cole Alexander and bassist Jared Swilley left the Renegades, and guitarist Ben Eberbaugh left the Reruns. Alexander and Swilley were known for their crude antics both during shows and at school. They were kicked out of school during their senior year after the Columbine Massacre in 1999 because they were regarded as a "subculture danger." Flower (American Band)
Flower is a New York City indie rock band formed by guitarist Richard Baluyut (later of Versus and Whysall Lane), singer and bassist Ian James (later of Cell and French), drummer Rob Hale (also later of Versus), and keyboardist Yosh Najita (formerly of synth band Groan Box). Flower was originally active from 1986 to 1990. As of 2018, Flower had reunited for at least one show with Caithlin De Marrais of Rainer Maria and Pohgoh. ''Built to Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston'' is a 2020 tribute album by indie rock band Built to Spill covering the works of outsider musician Daniel Johnston. It was released on June 12, 2020, by Ernest Jenning. The album was conceived after the band completed touring with Johnston during his final two concerts in November 2017. The album received positive reviews. Background and release Built to Spill accompanied Daniel Johnston at his final two concerts in November 2017; band member Doug Martsch described the two shows as "good" and "weird". During the tour, the band recorded covers of Johnston's songs while rehearsing. Martsch later said that the band had recorded the songs "for ourselves and our friends". In the fall of 2018, the band spontaneously recorded Johnston songs during a session in their former guitarist Jim Roth's studio, and then decided to record an album of Johnston songs. Their albums have been released by David Lowery's Pitch-A-Tent Records, Elf Power's Orange Twin Records, and Antenna Farm Records. The band has also self-released a number of singles and CD-Rs. History Je Suis France was formed in Athens, GA, in 1997.
