Ernest Hutchinson
David Alexander Ernest Hutchison (June 1, 1847 – December 4, 1918) was a lumber merchant and political figure in New Brunswick. He represented Northumberland County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1878 to 1882 and from 1886 to 1890. Northumberland County is located in northeastern New Brunswick, Canada. Geography Northumberland County is covered by thick forests, whose products stimulate the economy. The highest peaks in the province, including Mount Carleton lie in the northwestern corner of the county. The county is dominated by the Miramichi River, world famous for its salmon fishing. Richard Hutchison
Richard Hutchison (January 20, 1812 – September 27, 1891) was a New Brunswick businessman and political figure. He represented Northumberland in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1868 to 1872. He was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1812, the son of David Hutchison. He was educated there and came to New Brunswick in 1826. In 1840, Hutchison married Elizabeth Mackie. He was a lumber merchant in the Glasgow-based firm Gilmour, Rankin & Co (a branch of Pollok, Gilmour and Company) which operated on the Miramichi River; by 1852, he was the sole resident partner and he was given control of the operation in 1870. Hutchison represented Northumberland County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1864 to 1866. He was elected to the House of Commons in an 1868 by-election held after the death of John Mercer Johnson. Chatham, New Brunswick
Chatham is an urban neighbourhood in the city of Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. Prior to municipal amalgamation in 1995, Chatham was an incorporated town in Northumberland County along the south bank of the Miramichi River opposite Douglastown. Since amalgamation, it has been sometimes referred to as Miramichi East. Impact of geography on history At Chatham, the Miramichi River is quite wide, the water salt and tidal. Just downstream from the town, the river begins to widen into a broad estuary, where the Miramichi River gradually becomes Miramichi Bay. Because of its eastward facing location, ships coming from the British Isles in early times had easy access through the Strait of Belle Isle and across the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It was more accessible and safer to get to than the ports of Quebec City or Saint John, New Brunswick.
