Ernest Hardcastle
Lieutenant Ernest Hardcastle (31 December 1898 – November 1973) was an English World War I flying ace observer/gunner credited with twelve aerial victories. He would return to military service during World War II. Early life and service Ernest Hardcastle was born on 31 December 1898 in Dudley Hill, Bradford, England.Franks (1997), et al, p. 22. Hardcastle worked for the Bradford Chamber of Commerce until World War I began. He enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment, but transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in August 1917,Guttman & Dempsey (2007), p. 51. and after initial training as a cadet, was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant (on probation) on 30 January 1918. He was assigned to No. 20 Squadron RAF as an observer/gunner on 18 April 1918. Dudley Hill
Dudley Hill is a village in the borough of City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England and is in Tong ward. History There are a few mentions of the name Dudley Hill prior to the industrial revolution. Religious history John Wesley (1703–1791) visited Dudley Hill in 1744. The Wesleyan Sunday School opened in 1816, the Wesleyan Chapel in 1823 and the Ebenezer Primitive Methodists Chapel opened in 1833 and in 1861 Salem Chapel opened on Sticker Lane. Industrial history To the north Bowling Iron Works was founded in 1788. Terry's Mill opened in 1823, and Albion Mill, and Perseverance Mill appeared after 1850. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
The Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR) was established in 1936 to support the preparedness of the U.K. Royal Air Force in the event of another war. The Air Ministry intended it to form a supplement to the Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF), the active reserve for the RAF, by providing an additional non-active reserve. However during the Second World War the high demand for aircrew absorbed all available RAuxAF personnel and led the RAFVR to quickly become the main pathway of aircrew entry into the RAF. It was initially composed of civilians recruited from neighbourhood reserve flying schools, run by civilian contractors with largely RAF-trained flying instructors as well as other instructors in related air war functions, such as observers and wireless operators. After the war, and with the end of conscription in the early 1960s, the RAFVR considerably reduced in size and most functions were absorbed into the RAuxAF. Norman Franks
Norman Leslie Robert Franks (born 1940) is an English militaria writer who specialises in aviation topics. He focuses on the pilots and squadrons of World Wars I and II. Biography He published his first book in 1976. He was an Organisation and Methods Officer with the Nationwide Building Society in London before he retired. He now lives in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, with his wife Heather. They have two sons, Rob and Mike, and five grandchildren. He was a consultant for the Channel 4 television series ''Dogfight: The Mystery of the Red Baron''. His 1995 book on the Red Baron has been published and reissued by three publishers. He is also one of the founding members of the Cross and Cockade society for World War I aviation historians, which was formed in 1970, and a member of Over the Front, the league of World War I aviation historians.
