Ernest Gill (golfer)
Ernest Harry Gill (24 August 1877 – 1 June 1950) was an English amateur footballer who made single appearances at right-back for Southampton in 1900 and for Leicester Fosse in 1901. He also made five appearances for Leicestershire County Cricket Club in 1901. Football career Gill was born in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire before moving to South West England where he played as an amateur for White Star (Poole), Bridgwater Town and Bristol City (without making any first-team appearances). His performances earned him a call-up to represent the Somerset County Football Association. After playing for Grimsby Town reserves, he was offered a trial by Southern League champions, Southampton. He made his solitary appearance for the "Saints" on 17 March 1900, when he took the place of Peter Meechan at right-back against Sheppey United. Mountsorrel
Mountsorrel is a village in Leicestershire on the River Soar, just south of Loughborough with a population in 2001 of 6,662 inhabitants, increasing to 8,223 at the 2011 census. Geography The village is in the borough of Charnwood, surrounding a steep hill, once crowned by a castle, and is bordered to the east by the River Soar. The village is renowned for the Buttercross Market in the village centre as well as its granite quarry, the largest in Europe. The Leicester arm of the Grand Union Canal runs through Mountsorrel. The civil parish meets with Rothley to the south, and some houses are actually in Rothley parish near the southern A6 junction. To the west of the parish is a nature reserve. North of here, the Leicestershire Round passes east–west through the north of the village. The parish boundary meets Quorndon where it first meets the quarry near Buddon Wood. Somerset County Football Association
The Somerset County Football Association, also known as the Somerset FA, is the governing body of football in the county of Somerset. The association was formed in 1885. History The Somerset County Football Association was formed in 1885. There was a very small number of clubs at that time and no mandatory requirement to be affiliated. It is very different from today where there are in excess of 800 clubs which equates to probably more than 2,000 teams. The first Secretary was a Mr H J Ker Thompson of Burnham-on-Sea who resigned in 1896. At the time there was no appointed Chairman, one would be co-opted on the night of Council Meetings. Regular meeting venues were the Hare & Hounds – Shepton Mallet, The Swan Hotel – Wells, The Commercial Hotel – Midsomer Norton, Waldegrave Arms – Radstock, Star Hotel – Wells and Wells Town Hall. Somerset County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Somerset. George Swift (footballer)
George Harold Swift (3 February 1870 – 1956) was an English footballer who won the FA Cup with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and was later the first secretary-manager of Southampton. Playing career Swift was born in Oakengates, Shropshire and spent his early club career with Stoke and Crewe Alexandra, before he joined Football League club Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1891. He made his Wolves debut on 14 September 1891 in a 5–0 win over Accrington, one of four appearances that season. He was an ever-present in the 1892–93 season, which included the club winning their first ever FA Cup when they defeated Everton in the final. He moved to Loughborough after the subsequent season and later played at Leicester Fosse, Notts County and Leeds City before retiring in 1906.
