Ernest Dade

He was a member of the Staithes group, based in the North Yorkshire fishing village of Staithes. Early life Dade was born in Kensington, England, Dade's father, Frederick Dade (1836–1874), was a photographer, married to Matilda Toye (1835–1919) in 1859. Ernest had two older sisters and the family moved to Scarborough early in Ernest's life. Nelson Dawson
Nelson Ethelred Dawson (5 May 1859 – 28 October 1941) was an English artist and member of the Arts and Crafts movement. Dawson was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire and educated at Stamford School. He moved to London, where he operated his workshop first from Manresa Road, Chelsea (shared with Ernest Dade) and in due course from the rear of his townhouse in Chiswick. He exhibited his art throughout England including at the Royal Academy and was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. As a potter, watercolour painter, jeweller, silversmith, metalworker, etcher, print-maker and writer on artistic subjects, his reputation has probably suffered because he spread his talents too thinly. New English Art Club
The New English Art Club (NEAC) was founded in London in 1885 as an alternative venue to the Royal Academy. It continues to hold an annual exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Mall Galleries in London, exhibiting works by both members and artists from Britain and abroad whose work has been selected from an annual open submission. History Young English artists returning from studying art in Paris mounted the first exhibition of the New English Art Club in April 1886. Among them were William Laidlay, Thomas Cooper Gotch, Frank Bramley, John Singer Sargent, Philip Wilson Steer, George Clausen and Stanhope Forbes. Another founding member was G. P. Jacomb-Hood. National Maritime Museum
The National Maritime Museum (NMM) is a maritime museum in Greenwich, London. It is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, a network of museums in the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Imperial War Museums (IWM) is a British national museum organisation with branches at five locations in England, three of which are in London. The Society for Nautical Research is a British society that conducts research and sponsors projects related to maritime history worldwide. Founded in 1910, the Society initially encouraged research into seafaring, ship-building, the language and customs of the sea, and other items of nautical interest. Harold Knight (artist)
Harold Knight (27 January 1874 – 3 October 1961) was an English portrait, genre and landscape painter. Knight was born in Nottingham, England, the son of William Knight, architect, and studied at Nottingham School of Art under Wilson Foster. Nottingham had a reputation as among the best of the English provincial art schools and Knight won a series of prizes there, most notably for a series of oil studies of nudes. At the time he was considered to be the best student in the college. At the School of Art he met fellow artist Laura Johnson, whom he married in 1903. As Laura Knight, she became well known for her paintings of scenes from the ballet, circus and similar events. Dame Laura Knight ( Johnson; 4 August 1877 – 7 July 1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. Knight was a painter in the figurative, realist tradition, who embraced English Impressionism. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for women artists. St Martin-on-the-Hill, Scarborough
St Martin-on-the-Hill is a parish church in Scarborough, North Yorkshire in the Church of England. History The church was built between 1862 and 1863 to designs by the architect George Frederick Bodley. It comprises a north tower, saddleback roof, nave with clerestory, aisle and chancel. The west end contains a rose window. Much of the decoration and stained glass was completed by Morris & Co., some of the earliest work completed by this firm. The ceiling decoration of the chancel is by William Morris and Philip Webb. The altar wall displays the ''Adoration of the Magi'' by Edward Burne-Jones. The reredos and rood-screen date from 1889, a later addition by George Frederick Bodley; the artist was Charles Edgar Buckeridge. The paintings on the Bodley organ case were done by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope.
