Ernest Chapman
Ernest William Chapman, OAM (11 April 1926 – 21 March 2013) was an Australian rower and a lifelong clubman at the Sydney Rowing Club. He competed and won a bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics. School, club and state rowing Chapman's rowing career started at the Balmain Rowing Club in Sydney but he switched allegiance to the Sydney Rowing Club at the end of the 1940s and commenced a long association with the Sydney club. Chapman's first state selection for New South Wales came in 1950 as a reserve for the men's senior eight contesting the King's Cup at the annual Australian Interstate Regatta. He was a reserve for the New South Wales eights of 1951 and 1953 and rowed in the four seat of the 1952 King's Cup crew. He served as vice-captain of Sydney Rowing Club for eight consecutive seasons from 1951. He was the club president in two tenures, firstly from 1975 to 1978 and then from 1979 till 1995. Rowing At The Summer Olympics
Rowing at the Summer Olympics has been part of the competition since its debut in the 1900 Summer Olympics. Rowing was on the program at the 1896 Summer Olympics but was cancelled due to bad weather. Only men were allowed to compete until the women's events were introduced at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal which gave national federations the incentive to support women's events and catalysed growth in women's rowing. Lightweight rowing events (which have weight-limited crews) were introduced to the games in 1996. Qualifying for the rowing events is under the jurisdiction of the World Rowing Federation. World Rowing predates the modern Olympics and was the first international sport federation to join the modern Olympic movement. Parramatta River
The Parramatta River is an intermediate tide-dominated, drowned valley estuary located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. With an average depth of , the Parramatta River is the main tributary of Sydney Harbour, a branch of Port Jackson. Secondary tributaries include the smaller Lane Cove and Duck rivers. Formed by the confluence of Toongabbie Creek and Darling Mills Creek at North Parramatta, the river flows in an easterly direction to a line between Yurulbin in Birchgrove and Manns Point in Greenwich. Here it flows into Port Jackson, about from the Tasman Sea. The total catchment area of the river is approximately and is tidal to Charles Street Weir in Parramatta, approximately from the Sydney Heads. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat. Joe Gould (rower)
Ainslie Beric "Joe" Gould (24 January 1909 – 2 November 1994) was an Australian rower. He was an Australian national champion who competed in the men's eight event at the 1936 Summer Olympics. Club and state rowing Gould was educated at Sydney Grammar School where he took up rowing. He rowed for the New South Wales Police Club in Sydney and along with three other police rowers was selected to the New South Wales state eight which contested and won the 1935 King's Cup. In 1938 he again rowed in the New South Wales men's eight at the Interstate Regatta. International representative rowing In 1936 the NSW Police Club's eight dominated the Sydney racing season, the New South Wales state titles and won the Henley-on-Yarra event. Abbotsford is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Abbotsford is 10 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Canada Bay. Abbotsford sits on the peninsula between Abbotsford Bay and Hen and Chicken Bay, on the Parramatta River. History Abbotsford took its name from Abbotsford House, owned by Sir Arthur Renwick.
