Erma Byrd Higher Education Center
The Erma Byrd Higher Education Center is a joint venture extension campus of several colleges in West Virginia, US. It is located just off Interstate 64 near Beckley. It was dedicated in 2007 and is named for Erma Byrd, the wife of the West Virginia United States Senator Robert Byrd. Currently it is used by Marshall University for extension graduate programs under the control of the Marshall University - South Charleston Campus branch campus, by Bluefield State College for programs in nursing, and by Concord University for programs in business and teacher education. New River Community and Technical College also used the facility, but was forced to vacate in 2010 when it was unable to secure budgetary approval to pay the increasing rent at the center. Concord University
Concord University (Concord) is a public university in Athens, West Virginia. It was founded on February 28, 1872, when the West Virginia Legislature passed "an Act to locate a Branch State Normal School, in the town of Concord Church, in the County of Mercer". This normal school was founded by veterans of both the Union and the Confederacy, Concord is named for the ideal of "harmony and sweet fellowship". West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech, WVIT, WVU Beckley, or West Virginia Tech) is a public college in Beckley, West Virginia. It is a divisional campus of West Virginia University. History The college was founded in 1895 in Montgomery, West Virginia as the sub-collegiate Montgomery Preparatory School for West Virginia University. In 1917, it was separated from WVU and renamed the West Virginia Trade School. Next, in 1921, it reached the junior college level as the New River State School.
