Eritrean Free Zones Authority
The Eritrean Free Zones Authority (EFZA) is the government agency charged with the development and oversight of the free economic zones in Eritrea. It offers two economic zones in Massawa and Assab, both coastal cities. The Free Zones were announced in August 2001, and later nominally opened in September 2006. The Authority is currently under the supervision of CEO Araya Tsegay. The Massawa Free Zone offers access to the Massawa International Airport, as well as seaport access. Furthermore, it includes a container terminal and processing facilities. The port will also have access to the rail link, and mining operations became operational in 2008 in central Eritrea. Free Economic Zone
Free economic zones (FEZ), free economic territories (FETs) or free zones (FZ) are a class of special economic zone (SEZ) designated by the trade and commerce administrations of various countries. The term is used to designate areas in which companies are taxed very lightly or not at all to encourage economic activity. The taxation rules and duties are determined by each country. The World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (SCM) has content on the conditions and benefits of free zones. Some special economic zones are called free ports. Sometimes they have historically been endowed with favorable customs regulations, such as the free port of Trieste. As the United Kingdom was proposing the creation of ten free ports after leaving the European Union in early 2020, the EU was clamping down on 82 free zones after finding that their special status had aided the financing of terrorism, money laundering and organised crime. Assab
Assab or Aseb (, ) is a port city in the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea. It is situated on the west coast of the Red Sea. Languages spoken in Assab are predominantly Afar, Tigrinya, and Arabic. Assab is known for its large market, beaches and nightlife. History Assab is about 50 km NW of the ancient city of Arsinoe Epidires. On 15 November 1869 the port of Assab was bought by the Rubattino Shipping Company of Italy from the local Sultan. After the Italian government took over control of the port on 5 July 1882 it laid the foundations for the formation of the colony of Italian Eritrea, which became the independent country of Eritrea following its independence from the Transitional Government of Ethiopia in the 1990s. Construction of an oil refinery began in 1964 and it opened in 1967. By 1989, Assab had a population of 39,600 inhabitants. Massawa International Airport
Massawa International Airport is an airport in Massawa, a major city in the Northern Red Sea region of Eritrea. It is considered to be the successor of the Otumlo Airport, also in Massawa, which was destroyed in 1941. Overview The Massawa International Airport is a large establishment. It is one of Eritrea's major airports. In the colonial period in Italian Eritrea, a 1,970 km airway line was established between Massawa-Djibouti-Berbera-Galadi-Mogadishu. As of 2014, the airport accommodated only domestic flights since the companies that formed it do not have international licenses. The Eritrea Investment Centre has proposed a new $60 million development project at the airport. Additionally, it has offered incentives on taxation, provision of supplies that the market does not already provide, provision of heavy machinery, and easy access to government loans. Assab International Airport
Assab International Airport is an international airport in Assab, the capital of the Southern Red Sea region of Eritrea. Characteristics It serves as a dual public and military facility. The airport has an 11,531 ft (3,515 m) asphalt runway. It currently receives no regular scheduled airline flights. Government Of Eritrea
The Politics of Eritrea and the Government of Eritrea takes place in a framework of a single-party presidential republican totalitarian dictatorship. The President officially serves as both head of state and head of government. The People's Front for Democracy and Justice is the only political party legally permitted to exist in Eritrea. The popularly elected National Assembly of 150 seats, formed in 1993 shortly after independence from Ethiopia, elected the current president, Isaias Afewerki.
