Eritrea competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. It was the nation's fifth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics. The Eritrean National Olympic Committee ( ti, ሃገራዊ ኮሚቴ ኦሎምፒክ ኤርትራ; IOC code: ERI) is the National Olympic Committee representing Eritrea. It was created in 1996 and recognised by the IOC in 1999. The men's 10,000 metres at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program were held at the Athens Olympic Stadium on August 20. No preliminary rounds were held at this distance, since the number of competitors allowed a direct final. The Ethiopians were in control throughout the distance. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie ( Ge'ez: ግርማይ ገብረስላሰ, born 14 November 1995) is an Eritrean long distance runner. He won the 2015 World Championships in Athletics marathon in Beijing, China, becoming the youngest winner of the race at age 19 and became the first Eritrean to win a gold medal at the World Championships. On 6 November 2016, Ghirmay was the top men's finisher at the New York City Marathon, becoming the youngest male to ever win the race. Yemane Haileselassie (born 21 February 1998) is an Eritrean male steeplechase runner. He is the national record holder at 8:22.52 minutes and represented his country at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He made his international debut at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and placed 23rd in the junior race and shared in the team junior bronze medals.
