David Starr Jordan
David Starr Jordan (January 19, 1851 – September 19, 1931) was the founding president of Stanford University, serving from 1891 to 1913. He was an ichthyologist during his research career. Prior to serving as president of Stanford University, he had served as president of Indiana University from 1884 to 1891. Starr was also a strong supporter of eugenics, and his published views expressed a fear of "race-degeneration" and asserted that cattle and human beings are "governed by the same laws of selection". Catostomidae
The Catostomidae are the suckers of the order Cypriniformes, with about 78 species in this family of freshwater fishes. The Catostomidae are almost exclusively native to North America. The only exceptions are ''Catostomus catostomus,'' found in both North America and Russia, and ''Myxocyprinus asiaticus'' found only in China. In the Ozarks they are a common food fish and a festival is held each year to celebrate them. ''Ictiobus cyprinellus'' can reach an age up to 112 years, making it the oldest known freshwater teleost. Description and biology The mouths of these fish are most commonly located on the underside of their head ( subterminal), with thick, fleshy lips. The creek chubsucker (''Erimyzon oblongus'') is a freshwater fish of the sucker family (Catostomidae). Description The creek chubsucker is one of three species in the genus '' Erimyzon'' from the family Catostomidae present in eastern North America, and is found primarily in one of two disjunct populations; either in the eastern Coastal Plain streams or in the mid-western streams east of the Central Plains. The creek chubsucker is typically found in vegetated rocky riffle areas, runs, and pools of clear freshwater. The creek chubsucker is small in size typically measuring less than 10 inches and weighing slightly under a pound. There is generally no sexual dimorphism exhibited between males and females and lifespan is typically from five to seven years.
