Erigavo District
Erigavo District ( so, Degmada Ceerigaabo) is a district in the central Sanaag region of Somaliland. It is the largest and most populous district in Sanaag. Its capital lies at Erigavo. Demographics The total population of Erigavo District is 220,546. The district is exclusively inhabited by people from the Somali ethnic group, namely the Habar Yoonis in the north and the Dhulbahante in the south of the district. Administrative Divisions Of Somaliland
The administrative division of Somaliland are organized into three hierarchical levels. consists of 6 regions and 22 districts. Districts in turn contain villages. In addition, the capital Hargeisa has its own law (capital law) that is different from the law that defines administrative divisions. Waqdariya
Waqdariya (Waqddariya, Waqdariye, Waaq-Dariya, Waqderia) is a coastal village in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. Recent history In 1951, Waqdariya is listed in a book published in England under the name "Waqderia" as the coordinates 11°06′N 47°45 E. The inhabitants are mentioned as Musa Ismail of Habar Yoonis , Nub Omr of Warsangeli. Jidali
Jidali ( so, Jiidali) is a town in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. Overview Jidali is located north east of the provincial capital Erigavo. The grave of Zubeyr Awal, the eponymous ancestor of the Habr Awal, is located in the town. The town is approximately 100 km east of the tomb of his grandfather Sheikh Ishaaq bin Ahmed, the founding father of the Isaaq clan family, whose tomb is located in the coastal town of Maydh. History Jidali was one of many temporary headquarters of the Dervish movement led by Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, to which him and his forces fled to after their defeat in Jidbali. Dayaha ( so, Dayaxa) is a town in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. Overview Dayaha is 20km west of Erigavo, the administrative seat of the Sanaag region the town lies in. Gelweita
Gelweita ( so, Geel Wayta), also known as Las Galwayta or Galwayta is an archaeological site and a key rock art site in the eastern Sanaag region of Somaliland. Overview Gelweita is at an altitude of 7500ft and is near a plateau. The archeological site is approximately 40km or 25 miles west of Las Khorey. The site dates back thousands of years and is evidence of an earlier stone-age culture that inhabited the area. John Hanning Speke, an English explorer who made an exploratory expedition to the area in an attempt to reach the Nugaal Valley, described the site: He also remarked the favourable position that Gelweita lies in for a potential Somali settlement, however the tense relations between the Habr Gerhajis and the Warsangali, the Habr Gerhajis being the proprietors of the area, along with the Warsangali's lack of manpower made that impossible. Fiqifuliye
Fiqifuliye is a town in the Erigavo District of Sanaag region of Somaliland. Recent History On June 1, 1993, a meeting between the Habar Yoonis and the Dhulbahante clans was held in Fiqifuliye, and the Habar Yoonis clan agreed to invite the Dhulbahante clan to the upcoming clan meeting in Erigavo. In July 2013, in Fiqifuliye, more than 600 militiamen who had previously been on the Khatumo State side announced that they would join the Somaliland army. In March 2016, the Puntland Drought Relief Committee (based in Bosaso) dispatched a water truck as a first aid response to the drought around Fiqifuliye. In December 2018, Somaliland's Sanaag Governor Maxamed Axmed Caalin (Tiimbaro) visited Fiqifuliye and promised to initiate government projects. Qaʽableh
Qaableh ( so, Qacableh) is a town in the eastern Sanaag region of Somaliland. It is the site of numerous archaeological sites and ancient tombs. Overview Qa'ableh is located near the historical ruins of Haylan. Heis (town)
Heis ( so, Xiis, ) is a historic coastal town located in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. The town was important for trade and communication with the Somali interior and was used to export frankincense to Arabia. History Antiquity The site said to be identical with the ancient trading post of Mundus ( grc, Μούνδος) that is described in the ''Periplus of the Erythraean Sea'', an anonymous account by a Greek Alexandrian salesman from the 1st century CE. A large collection of cairns of various types lie near the city. Excavations here have yielded pottery and sherds of Roman glassware from a time between the 1st and 5th centuries. Among these artefacts is high-quality millefiori glass. Dated to 0-40 CE, it features red flower disks superimposed on a green background. Additionally, an ancient fragment of a footed bowl was discovered in the surrounding area.
