Erie–Ottawa International Airport
Erie–Ottawa International Airport, (Carl R. Keller Field) is three miles east of Port Clinton, in Ottawa County, Ohio. It is owned by the Erie–Ottawa Airport Authority. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a ''general aviation'' facility. On November 9, 2013, Erie–Ottawa Airport obtained approval to handle international flights. Most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, but this airport has no IATA code. Facilities The airport covers 169 acres (68 ha) at an elevation of 590 feet (180 m). It has two asphalt runways: 9/27 is 5,646 by 100 feet (1,721 x 30 m) and 18/36 is 4,001 by 75 feet (1,220 x 23 m). Port Clinton, Ohio
Port Clinton is a city in and the county seat of Ottawa County, located at the mouth of the Portage River on Lake Erie, about 44 miles east of Toledo. The population was 6,056 at the 2010 census. The city has been nicknamed the "Walleye Capital of the World", due to the productive fishing waters for the species lying offshore in Lake Erie's Western Basin. The annual Walleye Drop on New Year's Eve in downtown Port Clinton reflects this nickname. History Residents established the community in 1828 on the shores of the Portage River and Lake Erie. They named the town after DeWitt Clinton, a governor of New York who was instrumental in creating the Erie Canal, which connected the Midwest along the Great Lakes to the markets of the Hudson River and New York. Liberty Aviation Museum
The Liberty Aviation Museum is located in Port Clinton, Ohio, United States, adjacent to the Erie–Ottawa International Airport. History The Liberty Aviation Museum owns a 1928 Ford 5-AT Tri-motor, currently operating with the Experimental Aircraft Association for the Fly the Ford tour. The Tri-Motor Heritage Foundation is also based at the museum where some volunteers of the EAA Chapter 1247 are restoring an Island Airlines 1929 5-AT Ford Trimotor. Also at the Liberty Aviation Museum, is the Tin Goose Diner. The diner is a vintage 1950s O'Mahoney diner, originally operating in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania under the name of Sunrise Diner. The Diner became a permanent addition to the Liberty Aviation Museum in 2012. In 2015, the museum won a lawsuit against Treasure Cove Marina, arguing that they were overcharged for the restoration of their PT-boat. Rattlesnake Island is an island located on Lake Erie near Put-In-Bay, northeast of Port Clinton, Ohio. It is part of Put-in-Bay Township, in Ottawa County. It is one of several islands known as the Lake Erie Islands. The name Rattlesnake comes from the actual rattlesnakes that formerly inhabited the island, ( and supposedly also from the overall shape of the island — two small islets near the northern tip were said to resemble a rattlesnake's rattle). Kelleys Island Land Field Airport
Kelleys Island is both a village in Erie County, Ohio, and the island which it fully occupies in Lake Erie. The British originally called it Sandusky Island. Later the United States took it over and officially designated it as Island Number 6 and Cunningham Island. It was renamed as Kelleys Island in 1840 by brothers Datus and Irad Kelley, who had purchased nearly the entire island. History Kelleys Island was previously occupied by Native Americans of the area. During the beginning of the War of 1812, the island was used as a military rendezvous post, first by the British and later by the U.S. Military. During the early 19th century, the island was mostly uninhabited.
