Erick Miranda
Erick Roberto Miranda Chonay (born 17 December 1971) is a retired Guatemalan football defender who has played most of his career for CSD Comunicaciones of the Guatemalan premier division. He has been part of the Guatemala national team set-up for over 10 years. Club career Central defender Miranda has spent the majority of his career playing at local giants Comunicaciones where he has been club captain. He also had a spell at Heredia in the 2004/2005 season but returned to the ''Cremas'' in January 2006 for a short, second, spell before moving to second division side Deportivo Mixco. In September 2007 he joined fellow second division team Sanarate and in March 2009 Deportivo San Pedro were looking to acquiring his services. International career A national team stalwart for over 10 years, Miranda made his debut for Guatemala in a May 1991 UNCAF Nations Cup match against Honduras and has earned a total of 69 caps, scoring 2 goals. Escuintla
Escuintla () is an industrial city in Guatemala, its land extension is 4384 km², and it is nationally known for its sugar agribusiness. Its capital is a minicipality with the same name. Citizens celebrate from December 6 to 9 with a small fair in honor to The Immaculate Conception. In 2002 the city had a population of 86,678. It is located on the border of the central highlands and the Pacific coastal plain. Etymology Many of the names of the municipalities of Guatemala consist of one of two things: the name of a catholic saint to worship the day the city was founded or a description with Náhuatl roots. These influences are due to the troops in command of Pedro de Alvarado who invaded the region in 1520. These troops were composed of Spanish soldiers and indigenous Tlaxcaltecs. 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup
The 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup was the fifth edition of the Gold Cup, the soccer championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF), and the 15th overall CONCACAF tournament. It was held in Los Angeles, Miami, and San Diego in the United States. The format of the tournament changed from 1998; it was expanded to twelve teams, split into four groups of three. The top two teams in each group would advance to the quarter-finals. Peru and Colombia were invited from CONMEBOL, and the Republic of Korea were invited from AFC. With all three games in Group D ending in ties and Canada tied with the Republic of Korea on every tiebreaker, a coin toss was used. Canada won and advanced to the quarter-finals.
