Erica, Victoria
Erica is a town in Victoria, Australia, on Rawson Road, in the Shire of Baw Baw. The area was generally known as Upper Moondarra in the early 1900s, the township of Erica beginning to grow after construction of the railway line from Moe to Walhalla, which passed through the area. When the station opened in 1910 it was named Harris, but had been renamed Erica after a nearby mountain by 1914. As a consequence, the Post Office opened on 14 July 1910 as Upper Moondarra and was renamed Erica in 1914. The township of Erica lived mainly from forestry and agriculture, and owing to Walhalla's decline by the 1920s was the largest town on the Moe-Walhalla railway. The section of line past Erica closed to traffic in 1944, save for occasional goods services to Platina station, and the line from Moe to Erica closed completely in 1954. Mount St Gwinear
Mount St Gwinear is a mountain in Victoria, Australia, located at the north-east end of the Baw Baw National Park in the Gippsland high country. It is popular with families looking for a cheap and accessible snow-play/tobogganing destination and cross-country skiers. The Baw Baw Plateau provides an abundance of easy touring terrain. Mount Baw Baw downhill ski village is approximately 9 km away across the Baw Baw plateau to the south-west and trails link the resorts. Mount Baw Baw
Mount Baw Baw is a mountain summit on the Baw-Baw Plateau of the Great Dividing Range, located in Victoria, Australia. The name is from the Woiwurrung language spoken by Eastern Kulin people. It is of uncertain meaning, but possibly signifies, ''echo'', or ''ghost''. The Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort is an unincorporated area, that includes the Mt Baw Baw summit, which is under the direct administration of the government of Victoria, and is surrounded by the Baw Baw National Park, in the Shire of Baw Baw Location Mount Baw Baw is about east of Melbourne and north of the Latrobe Valley. Walhalla Goldfields Railway
The Walhalla Goldfields Railway is a narrow gauge tourist railway located in the Thomson River and Stringers Creek valleys in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, near the former gold-mining town and tourist destination of Walhalla. History The Walhalla line was the last of four experimental narrow gauge lines of the Victorian Railways, the Moe-Walhalla railway commenced in 1904, but was not completed until 1910. The railway was expected to be a boon for Walhalla, which was in a state of decline with gold mining operations becoming uneconomical. The largest gold mining company closed in 1914. After the closure of the Walhalla mines, substantial timber traffic was carried from saw-mills around Erica until the late 1940s. Thomson Dam
The Thomson Dam is a major Clay core and rockfill embankment dam with a Uncontrolled, Ogee-shaped overflow weir and chute spillway across the Thomson River, located about east of Melbourne in the West Gippsland region of the Australian state of Victoria. The reservoir (or storage basin) created by the dam is officially called Thomson Reservoir, sometimes called Lake Thomson. Erica Railway Station
Erica was a railway station on the Walhalla narrow gauge line in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. The station was officially opened in 1910, became the terminus of the line on 4 October 1952 with the closure of the section of track to Platina, then closed finally on 25 June 1954. From 1941 onwards, the station also had sidings for a Forest Commission timber mill. Erica was originally named Upper Moondarra, but was renamed prior to 15 June 1908 to Moondarra, then to Harris (after a local member of parliament) prior to the line opening. In 1914 it was renamed Erica after a local mountain.
