Eric Roy (politician)
Eric Wilbur Roy (born 27 June 1948) is a New Zealand politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the National Party. He was first elected in 1993 and served, with one three-year break, until 2014. Early years Roy was born in Gore in 1948. Before entering politics, he was a farmer and company director. He is a Justice of the Peace. Member of Parliament He first entered Parliament in the 1993 election as MP for the Awarua electorate. For the , Awarua was merged into and he was beaten by Labour's Mark Peck, but he remained in Parliament through being elected through the party list. He unsuccessfully contested the Invercargill electorate in the but remained a list MP. Invercargill is an electorate of the New Zealand Parliament that has existed since 1866. Since the , the electorate's representative is Penny Simmonds of the National Party. Population centres The electorate covers Invercargill city and the surrounding rural area, including Stewart Island / Rakiura. In 1996 a boundary redistribution resulted in the abolition of the Awarua electorate and merged with Invercargill following re-drawing of boundaries due to the introduction of mixed-member proportional voting ( MMP). Minor but steady population decline in the Southland region has generally resulted in Invercargill expanding northwards. The 2013 redistribution, however, has left Invercargill unchanged. 2002 New Zealand General Election
The 2002 New Zealand general election was held on 27 July 2002 to determine the composition of the 47th New Zealand Parliament. It saw the reelection of Helen Clark's Labour Party government, as well as the worst-ever performance by the opposition National Party. The 2020 election would see it suffer a greater defeat in terms of net loss of seats. A controversial issue in the election campaign was the end of a moratorium on genetic engineering, strongly opposed by the Green Party. The Queen's Service Order, established by royal warrant of Queen Elizabeth II on 13 March 1975, is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office". The 2011 New Zealand general election took place on Saturday 26 November 2011 to determine the membership of the 50th New Zealand Parliament.
