Eric Monaghan
Eric James Monaghan (born 31 October 1957) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Monaghan made his British leagues debut during the 1979 National League season, where he rode for Ellesmere Port Gunners. In 1979, he helped the Ellesmere Port win the Fours Championship during the 1979 season. He continued to ride for Ellesmere Port until they disbanded at the end of 1982. He then joined Sheffield Tigers for the 1983 British League season and then Halifax Dukes for the 1984 British League season. He switched back to the National League in 1986, when he joined Mildenhall Fen Tigers and was part of the team that won the National League Four-Team Championship in 1987. After three seasons at Mildenhall, Monaghan signed for Stoke Potters, where he would spend four years from 1989 until 1992. Ellesmere Port Gunners
Ellesmere Port Gunners were an English Motorcycle speedway, speedway team in Ellesmere Port, Wirral Peninsula, Wirral, which operated at the Ellesmere Port Stadium from 1972 until their closure in 1985. History The inaugural league season for the team was during the 1972 British League Division Two season in which they finished in 15th place. The first track record on the 424 yard track was 76.0 seconds, set by John Jackson on 2 May 1972. The team continued to operate from 1972 until 1982 continuously competing in Division Two for 11 years, with a best place finish of 2nd in 1976. A rider died on the Ellesmere Port track on 3 December 1977. Stuart Shirley lost his life on a Saturday morning training school after a collision. The 1983 British League season was the 49th season of the top tier of speedway in the United Kingdom and the 19th known as the British League. Summary Cradley Heath Heathens won the league and cup double. Despite losing their double world champion Bruce Penhall to retirement the Cradley side performed just as well. Erik Gundersen, Simon Wigg and Lance King were now some of the world's leading riders and backed up by Phil Collins, Alan Grahame and Peter Ravn they were a formidable team. Speedway career Crabtree rode in the top two tiers of British Speedway from 1977 to 1996, riding for various clubs.
