Eric Mervyn Lindsay
Eric Mervyn Lindsay FRAS (26 January 1907 – 27 July 1974) was an Irish astronomer. He was born at The Grange near Portadown, County Armagh to Richard and Susan Lindsay. He was educated in Dublin at the King's Hospital School, then attended Queen's University, Belfast where he earned his BSc in 1928 and a MSc in 1929. He later went to Harvard University and was awarded a PhD in 1934. He then went to South Africa for a post-graduate astronomy studies, and on 20 May 1935 was married to Sylvia Mussells in Cape Town. He returned to Ireland in 1937 to become director of the Armagh Observatory. He remained the director of the observatory until his death of a sudden heart attack in 1974. Lindsay (crater)
Lindsay is a small lunar impact crater in the central highlands of the Moon. It was named after the Irish astronomer Eric Mervyn Lindsay. It lies in the irregular terrain to the northwest of the landing site of the Apollo 16 mission. To the south is the crater Anděl, and Taylor is to the east-northeast. Dr E. J. Öpik stated that this crater was likely formed by the impact of an asteroid about 1 mile (1.6 km) in diameter. The outer rim of this crater is worn and irregular, with incisions along the northern and southern inner walls. There is a cleft in the southeastern rim that links with the slightly larger Dollond B. Armagh Planetarium
Armagh Planetarium is a planetarium located in Armagh, Northern Ireland close to the city centre and neighbouring Armagh Observatory in approximately fourteen acres of landscaped grounds known as the Armagh Astropark. History Armagh Planetarium was established by the seventh director of Armagh Observatory, Dr. Eric Mervyn Lindsay, who, after twenty-five years of effort, secured funding from local councils and the Ministry of Commerce of Northern Ireland in 1965. In the same year Patrick Moore was appointed as Director of the Planetarium to oversee its construction.
