Eric Dixon
Eric "Big Daddy" Dixon (March 28, 1930 – October 19, 1989) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, flautist, composer, and arranger. Dixon's professional career extended from 1950 until his death in 1989, during which time he was credited on as many as 200 recordings. Career Having played bugle as a child, Dixon took up the tenor saxophone at the age of 12. Following a stint experience a musician in the US Army (1951–3) he played in groups that sometimes included Mal Waldron, with whom he would later record. In 1954, he played with Cootie Williams and the following year with Johnny Hodges. In 1956, he performed and recorded with Bennie Green and also took up the flute. In the late 1950s he spent four years in the house band led by Reuben Phillips at the Apollo Theatre in New York. Frank Benjamin Foster III (September 23, 1928 – July 26, 2011) was an American tenor and soprano saxophonist, flautist, arranger, and composer. ''Sinatra at the Sands'' is a live album by Frank Sinatra accompanied by Count Basie and his orchestra, and conducted and arranged by Quincy Jones, recorded live in the Copa Room of the former Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in 1966. It was Sinatra's first live album to be commercially released, and contains many definitive readings of the songs that are most readily associated with Sinatra. Sinatra and Basie had previously collaborated on 1962's '' Sinatra-Basie'' and 1964's ''It Might As Well Be Swing'', with both albums released on Sinatra's Reprise label. It was released on the Reprise label in 1998. The album is of the warm-up sets by Basie's band before Sinatra's performances. Reception ''AllMusic'' awarded the album 3 stars stating "this is overall a legendary band doing a somewhat less-than-legendary set, during some gigs that, in fairness, yielded up a great live album elsewhere. The quality is solid live sound, in crisp stereo from a nicely controlled mid-'60s venue, using state-of-the-art equipment". The album is a collection of musical pieces originating from the first four James Bond films; '' Dr No'', '' From Russia with Love'', '' Goldfinger'' and '' Thunderball''. The album was Basie's first for United Records, and was produced by Teddy Reig. Reception Ken Dryden, writing on AllMusic said of the album that "While it seems doubtful that Basie added any of this music to his regular band repertoire, his band does its best to do justice to the arrangements." Dryden praised Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis's solo on "Goldfinger" and Marshall Royal and Count Basie's solos on "Thunderball". Dryden conceded that the album could be "safely bypassed by most jazz fans" but said that Basie's fans might "find this surprising LP worth the investment".
