Eric Brownell
Eric Lindsay Douglas Brownell (7 November 1876 – 22 October 1945) was an Australian-born English cricketer, who played one first-class match, for Worcestershire against Oxford University in 1908. He scored 21 and 7 and took one catch in the second innings, to dismiss Oxford opener Chris Hurst. First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Worcestershire County Cricket Club
Worcestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Worcestershire. Its Vitality Blast T20 team has been rebranded the Worcestershire Rapids, but the county is known by most fans as 'the Pears'. The club is based at New Road, Worcester. Founded in 1865, Worcestershire held minor status at first and was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship in the 1890s, winning the competition three times. Oxford University Cricket Club
Oxford University Cricket Club (OUCC), which represents the University of Oxford, has always held first-class status since 1827 when it made its debut in the inaugural University Match between OUCC and Cambridge University Cricket Club (CUCC). It was classified as a List A team in 1973 only. Home fixtures are played at the University Parks slightly northeast of Oxford city centre. Chris Hurst (cricketer)
Christopher Salkeld Hurst (20 July 1886 – 18 December 1963) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Oxford University, Kent and various amateur teams between 1906 and 1927. In his working life, he was a civil servant whose main work was concerned with the rationalisation and reorganisation of the UK coal industry to the point where the industry could be nationalised after the Second World War. Early life He was born at Beckenham in Kent in 1886. He was educated at Uppingham School where he played cricket for the school XI from 1903 to 1905, captaining the side in his final year. He also played hockey, rugby union and Eton Fives for the school, also captaining the school hockey and Fives teams in 1905.
