Erhard Fischer
Martin Erhard Fischer (10 November 1922 – 20 December 1996) was a German music and theater director. Career Born in Radeberg, Fischer studied with in Dresden. His directing debut took place in Radebeul with Mozart's ''Die Entführung aus dem Serail''. From 1950 to 1960, Fischer worked as an assistant and director at the Dresden State Opera. From 1960 to 1965 he worked under the opera director Joachim Herz as chief conductor and artistic director of the Kleiner Haus an der Oper Leipzig; here he set up productions of ''Fidelio'', ''Aida'', ''Tannhäuser'' and ''Nabucco''. In 1965 he changed as head director, from 1969 as "chief director" to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin. Here he was also director of rarities like ''The Golden Cockerel'', '' The Nose'', ''Katerina Ismaelova'' (Stalinist version of the '' Lady Macbeth von Mzensk''), ''The Devils of Loudun'', ''Les vêpres siciliennes'' and Hans Pfitzner's ''Palestrina'' (with Peter Schreier in the title role). Palestrina (opera)
''Palestrina'' is an opera by the German composer Hans Pfitzner, first performed in 1917. The composer referred to it as a ''Musikalische Legende'' (musical legend), and wrote the libretto himself, based on a legend about the Renaissance musician Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, who saves the art of contrapuntal music (polyphony) for the Church in the sixteenth century through his composition of the ''Missa Papae Marcelli''. The wider context is that of the European Reformation and the role of music in relation to it. The character of Cardinal Borromeo is depicted, and a General Congress of the Council of Trent is the centrepiece of act 2. The conductor of the premiere was Bruno Walter. The Trial Of Lucullus
''The Trial of Lucullus'' is a short didactic radio play by the German dramatist Bertolt Brecht written in verse. It was completed in 1940. In it, the great Roman general Lucullus appears after death before a judge and jury of the underworld, who are to decide whether he should be condemned to Hades or admitted to the Elysian fields. The jury, representing the lower classes, allows Lucullus to call as witnesses portrayed on a triumphal frieze. All the evidence is against Lucullus, except for the fact that he introduced the cherry tree to Europe, grieved over the destruction of books, and was possessed of a fine culinary experience. Though first conceived as an opera, the text was set to music by Paul Dessau. Communist authorities banned it, causing Brecht to revise scenes and changing the title to ''The Condemnation of Lucullus''. The revised version of ''The Condemnation of Lucullus'' premiered in 1951. Walter Felsenstein (30 May 1901 – 8 October 1975) was an Austrian theater and opera director. He was one of the most important exponents of textual accuracy, productions in which dramatic and musical values were exquisitely researched and balanced. His most famous students were Götz Friedrich and Harry Kupfer both of whom went on to have important careers developing Felsenstein's work. Hans Pischner (20 February 1914 – 15 October 2016) was a German harpsichordist, musicologist, opera director, and politician active in the German Democratic Republic.
