Equity Guild Awards
The Performing Arts WA Awards, or PAWA Awards, are annual awards for the live performing arts in Perth, Western Australia. The Awards are held by Artist Relief Fund WA, and were formerly known as the Equity Guild Awards. The awards include mainstage theatre and independent theatre and, from 2018, dance. A musicals & opera section was introduced in 2021. Perth Festival
Perth Festival, named Perth International Arts Festival (PIAF) between 2000 and 2017, and sometimes referred to as the Festival of Perth, is Australia's longest-running cultural festival, held annually in Western Australia. The program features contemporary and classical music, dance, theatre, performance, literature and ideas, visual arts, large-scale public works. The main events of the festival take place every year from February to March and the film program now known as Lotterywest Films runs from November to April, as part of the Perth Festival. Perth Festival takes place and various indoor and outdoor venues across Perth. The festival is run by UWA in partnership with the state government and the Perth City Council. The Arrival (graphic Novel)
''The Arrival'' by Shaun Tan is a wordless graphic novel published by Hodder Children's Books in 2006. The book is 128 pages long and divided into six chapters; it is composed of small, medium, and large panels, and often features pages of full artwork. It features an immigrant's life in an imaginary world that sometimes vaguely resembles our own. Without the use of dialogue or text, Shaun Tan portrays the experience of a father emigrating to a new land. Tan differentiates ''The Arrival'' from children's picture books, explaining that there's more emphasis on continuity in texts with multiple frames and panels, and that a graphic novel text like his more closely resembles a film making process. The Addams Family (musical)
''The Addams Family'' is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The show is based upon ''The Addams Family'' characters created by Charles Addams in his single-panel gag cartoons, which depict a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. Although numerous film and television adaptations of Addams' cartoons exist, the musical is the first stage show based on the characters. ''The Addams Family'' is also the first show produced by Elephant Eye Theatricals. After a tryout in Chicago in 2009, the musical opened on Broadway in April 2010. State Opera South Australia (SOSA) is a professional opera company in Adelaide, South Australia, established in 1976. Opera Queensland is an opera company based in Brisbane, Queensland. The company was founded with funding from the Queensland State Government in 1981 under the name ''Lyric Opera of Queensland'' after the Queensland Opera Company was closed in December 1980. West Australian Opera (WAO) is the principal opera company of Western Australia and is a resident company at His Majesty's Theatre, Perth. The company formed in 1967 and works in close association with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. ''La traviata'' (; ''The Fallen Woman'') is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on ''La Dame aux camélias'' (1852), a play by Alexandre Dumas ''fils'' adapted from his own 1848 novel. The opera was originally titled ''Violetta'', after the main character. ''Anything Is Valid Dance Theatre'' is a contemporary dance company based in Perth. The company was founded in 2008 by Serena Chalker and Quindell Orton, graduates of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and is a company that works in site-specific and immersive performance. West Australian Ballet
West Australian Ballet is the State ballet company of Western Australia and is based in Perth, at the Western Australian Ballet Centre in Maylands. The company was founded in 1952 by Madame Kira Bousloff (formerly of the Ballets Russes) and the oldest ballet company in Australia. Artistic directors have included Garth Welch (1979–83) and Ivan Cavallari (2007–12). The current artistic director is Belgian Aurelien Scannella. Hofesh Shechter
Hofesh Shechter (born 3 May 1975) is an Israeli choreographer, dancer and composer based in London. He is best known for being the founder and artistic director of the Hofesh Shechter Company. Shechter was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Choreography in 2016 for his work on Bartlett Sher's revival of '' Fiddler on the Roof''. Since 2016, he has been named as one of The Stage's 100 most influential people in theatre. Early life Hofesh Shechter was born in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1975. At 6, Shechter began to study piano, later developing an interest in folk dance aged 12. At 15, he successfully auditioned for the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance as a pianist, but switched to dance upon his arrival, taking formal classes in ballet and modern dance.
