Eptesicus Serotinus
The serotine bat (''Eptesicus serotinus''), also known as the common serotine bat, big brown bat, or silky bat, is a fairly large Eurasian bat with quite large ears. It has a wingspan of around and often hunts in woodland. It sometimes roosts in buildings, hanging upside down, in small groups or individually. The name serotine is derived from the Latin ''serotinus'', which means 'evening', while the generic name derives from Greek ἔπιεν and οίκος, which means 'house flyer'. Taxonomy The following subspecies have been recognised. *''Eptesicus serotinus boscai'': southern Iberia and Morocco *''Eptesicus serotinus pashtonus'': Pakistan and Afghanistan *''Eptesicus serotinus serotinus'': northern and eastern Europe and western Asia *''Eptesicus serotinus turcomanus'': central Asia and Xinjiang The Oriental serotine (''E. pachyomus'') and its constituent subspecies were formerly considered a subspecies of ''E. serotinus'', comprising its eastern populations, and is s ... Leaf-nosed Bat
The New World leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) are found from southern North America to South America, specifically from the Southwest United States to northern Argentina. They are ecologically the most varied and diverse family within the order Chiroptera. Most species are insectivorous, but the phyllostomid bats include within their number true predatory species and frugivores (subfamily Stenodermatinae and Carolliinae). For example, the spectral bat (''Vampyrum spectrum''), the largest bat in the Americas, eats vertebrate prey, including small, dove-sized birds. Members of this family have evolved to use food groups such as fruit, nectar, pollen, insects, frogs, other bats, and small vertebrates, and in the case of the vampire bats, even blood. Both the scientific and common names derive from their often large, lance-shaped noses, greatly reduced in some of the nectar- and pollen-feeders. Because these bats echolocate nasally, this "nose-leaf" is thought to serve some role ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Whiskered Bat
The whiskered bat (''Myotis mystacinus'') is a small European bat with long fur. Although uncommon, ''M. mystacinus'' is often found around human habitation and around water; it is similar to Brandt's bat (''Myotis brandtii''), from which it was distinguished as a separate species only in 1970. Overview The analysis of morphological, behavioural, and especially genetic characters have since identified further cryptic species of whiskered bats in the genus ''Myotis'', including ''Myotis alcathoe The Alcathoe bat (''Myotis alcathoe'') is a European bat in the genus ''Myotis''. Natterer's Bat
Natterer's bat (''Myotis nattereri'') is a European vespertilionid bat with pale wings. It has brown fur tending to greyish-white on its underside. It is found across most of the continent of Europe, parts of the Near East and North Africa. It feeds on insects and other invertebrates which it catches on the wing or pursues on the ground. In summer it roosts in deciduous and coniferous trees, buildings or bat boxes close to its feeding habitats. In winter it hibernates in caves, tunnels, mines or cellars, usually hiding in crevices. This bat was first described in 1817 by Heinrich Kuhl, who named it in honour of the Austrian naturalist Johann Natterer. Description Natterer's bat is a medium-sized species and grows to a head and body length of with a forearm (elbow to wrist) length of . It weighs between . The short, dense fur on the dorsal (upper) surface of head and body is greyish-brown while the ventral (under) surface is whitish-grey. The ears and the wing membranes are smok ... Brown Long-eared Bat
The brown long-eared bat or common long-eared bat (''Plecotus auritus'') is a small Eurasian insectivorous bat. It has distinctive ears, long and with a distinctive fold. It is extremely similar to the much rarer grey long-eared bat which was only validated as a distinct species in the 1960s. An adult brown long-eared bat has a body length of 4.5–4.8 cm, a tail of 4.1–4.6 cm, and a forearm length of 4–4.2 cm. The ears are 3.3–3.9 cm in length, and readily distinguish the long-eared bats from most other bat species. They are relatively slow flyers compared to other bat species. Habitat The brown long-eared bat is found throughout Europe, with the exception of Greece, southern Italy and southern Spain. It is found to the east up to the Urals and Caucasus. The UK distribution can be found on the National Biodiversity Network website and can be seehere Brown long-eared bats regularly utilise buildings roosting in undisturbed roof spaces either singly, i ... Pipistrelle
''Pipistrellus'' is a genus of bats in the family Vespertilionidae and subfamily Vespertilioninae. The name of the genus is derived from the Italian language, Italian word , meaning "bat" (from Latin "bird of evening, bat"). The size of the genus has been considerably reduced as a result of work during the 1990s and 2000s, with genera such as ''Arielulus'', ''Hypsugo'', ''Falsistrellus'', ''Neoromicia'', ''Parastrellus'', ''Perimyotis'', ''Scotozous'', and ''Vespadelus'' being split off. Still, Molecular phylogenetics, molecular evidence suggests the genus is not monophyletic. Several other genera in the subfamily Vespertilioninae have also been merged with ''Pipistrellus'' in previous classifications. Species in the genus may be referred to as "pipistrelles" or "pipistrelle bats", though these terms are also used for species now placed in other genera, such as the western pipistrelle (''Parastrellus hesperus'') and eastern pipistrelle (''Perimyotis subflavus'') of North Americ ... Bat Conservation Trust
The Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) is a registered British charity dedicated to the conservation of bats and their habitats in the UK. BCT was founded in 1991 and is the only national organisation solely devoted to bats. Its vision is a world where bats and people live in harmony. BCT currently has a membership of around 5,600, including individuals, families, teachers and youth workers and corporate businesses. BCT’s work is based on four key objectives, which are seen as critical to maintaining a sustainable, diverse bat population in the UK: * To determine target population levels and associated habitats * To secure and maintain the stated target bat population levels * To act as the authoritative voice for bat conservation * To win the required level of support to achieve the target number of bats. National Bat Helpline BCT runs the National Bat Helpline, providing information to anyone needing advice on issues relating to bats, and connecting people with local bat carers ...
