Epistrophy (composition)
This is a list of compositions by jazz musician Thelonious Monk. 0-9 52nd Street Theme A contrafact based loosely on rhythm changes in C, and was copyrighted by Monk under the title "Nameless" in April 1944. The tune was also called "Bip Bop" by Monk, and he claims that the tune's latter title was the origin of the genre-defining name bebop. It quickly became popular as an opening and closing tune on the clubs on 52nd Street on Manhattan where Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker played. It was first recorded by Dizzy Gillespie's sextet on February 22, 1946, under the title "52nd Street Theme". Leonard Feather claims he gave the latter title. Jon Hendricks wrote lyrics to the tune and called it ”How I Wish”; it was first recorded by Carmen McRae on ''Carmen Sings Monk''. Mark Murphy sings a versio ... Epistrophy (Steve Lacy Album)
''Epistrophy'' (also released as ''Steve Lacy Plays Monk'') is the second album by Steve Lacy to consist entirely of tunes written by Thelonious Monk following '' Reflections'' (1958). It was released in 1969 on the French BYG label and features performances by Lacy, Michel Graillier, Jean-François Jenny Clark and Aldo Romano. Reception The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 4 stars stating "This is easily Lacy's "straightest" album from the period, and he stays melodically and harmonically close to Monk's original compositions in the heads before taking off elsewhere in the solos. But Lacy keeps to the notion of repetition, syncopation, and melodic invention that Monk did, and the band is nearly symbiotic in its communication around and with him. The music here is a delight and a revelation all at the same time. The sound is warm and full and the transfer is solid.".Jurek, T.Allmusic Reviewaccessed June 26, 2011 Track listing # "Thelonious" - 7:00 # "Ruby My De ...
