''Epidendrum geniculatum'' is a deciduous, sympodial, caespitose orchid native to the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, at elevations from 300 – 800 m. Synonymy and confusion A description of ''Epidendrum geniculatum'' was published in 1882 by João Barbosa Rodrigues. Eight years later, in 1890, Joseph Dalton Hooker published a description of an orchid, under the name of ''Epidendrum geniculatum'' for which William Roxburgh had published a description 70 years earlier, with the name ''Aerides multiflora''. Thus, ''Epidendrum geniculatum'' Hook.f. is a synonym for ''Aerides multiflora'' Roxb., and a very different taxon from ''Epidendrum geniculatum'' Barb.Rodr., the subject of this article. João Barbosa Rodrigues
João Barbosa Rodrigues (June 22, 1842 – March 6, 1909) was considered one of Brazil's greatest botanists, known especially for his work on orchids and palms. For nearly two decades he was director of the Botanic Garden of Rio de Janeiro. Something of a polymath, he was a prolific botanical artist who also made contributions to his country's ethnography, geography, linguistics, zoology, and literature. Early life and education Rodrigues was born on June 22, 1842, in São Gonçalo do Sapucaí, Brazil, and was initially raised in Campanha, in the state of Minas Gerais, before the family returned to Rio in 1858. His father was a Portuguese merchant, and his mother was a Brazilian of Indian descent. He had several siblings: brothers João Baptista and Arthur and sisters Maria and Olympia. In botany, a peduncle is a stalk supporting an inflorescence or a solitary flower, or, after fecundation, an infructescence or a solitary fruit. The peduncle sometimes has bracts (a type of cataphylls) at nodes. The main axis of an inflorescence above the peduncle is the rachis. There are no flowers on the peduncle but there are flowers on the rachis. The column, or technically the gynostemium, is a reproductive structure that can be found in several plant families: Aristolochiaceae, Orchidaceae, and Stylidiaceae.
