Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program
The Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program (ESLPP) is a land acquisition program in Sarasota County, Florida dedicated to acquiring and preserving the natural Florida habitat within the county. History The program is funded by taxes and was approved by voters in a referendum in March 1999. The initial referendum allowed the county to collect 0.25 mil (25 cents for every $1,000 of taxable value) in ad valorem tax through 2019 which was used for the acquisition, protection, and management of environmentally sensitive lands. A second referendum was approved by voters in November 2005, extending the program to 2029, and included neighborhood parkland acquisitions. This expanded the program to have a Neighborhood Parkland Acquisition Program (NPP). The county also acquires land through other means, such as grants, donations, partnerships, and conservation easements. Sarasota County is a county located in Southwest Florida. At the 2020 US census, the population was 434,006. Its county seat is Sarasota and its largest city is North Port. State Road 776 (SR 776) is a state highway serving southern Sarasota County and northwestern Charlotte County, Florida. It acts as a loop road of U.S. Route 41 (US 41) that bypasses North Port. Route description From its western terminus with US 41/ SR 45 (Tamiami Trail) near South Venice, SR 776 travels along Englewood Road through Woodmere and North Indiana Avenue in Englewood. This segment was originally a portion of SR 775. After entering Charlotte County, SR 776 continues eastward as McCall Road before turning to the northeast near Charlotte Beach. The Manasota Scrub Preserve is an area of protected land in Sarasota County, Florida. It is located at 2695 Bridge Street in Englewood, Florida, in a suburban area that is part of the Lemon Bay watershed. Circus Hammock is a preserve with unpaved walking trails in Sarasota, Florida. The name is a reference to the historic winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers Circus. Curry Creek Preserve is an 80-acre preserve with trails and a paddle boat launch in Venice, Florida. It is located at 1075 Albee Farm Road. Deer Prairie Creek Preserve is a natural area with of trail in unincorporated Sarasota County, Florida, USA, around along the Myakka River. History The land was acquired between 2000 and 2004 through a partnership between Sarasota County’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program (ESLPP) and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). Lemon Bay
Lemon Bay is a long, narrow and shallow body of water covering 8,000 acres in Charlotte County, Florida and Sarasota County, Florida. It is protected as the Lemon Bay Aquatic Preserve, designated in 1986. It is one of five Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves. The bay is fed by one Gulf pass, Stump Pass, and seven tributaries and includes areas of mangrove, marsh grass, and seagrass. It provides habitat for bird, invertebrate and fish species and offers fishing, kayaking, birding, wading and beachcombing opportunities. Sleeping Turtles Preserve
Sleeping Turtles Preserve (known locally as two separate entities as Sleeping Turtles Preserve North and Sleeping Turtles Preserve South) includes of land in Sarasota County, Florida, that were purchased in four parcels during 2003 and 2004 through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program (ESLPP). Warm Mineral Springs (spring)
The Warm Mineral Springs is a water-filled sinkhole located in North Port, Florida, a mile north of U.S. 41. The primary water supply is a spring vent deep beneath the pool's water surface. Warm Mineral Springs is the only warm water mineral spring in the State of Florida. It is an important geological and archaeological site containing Native American remnants. The site was operated as a spa from 1946 until 2000. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1977. The springs re-opened for swimming only in 2014.
