''Environment'' is a 1922 American silent crime film directed by Irving Cummings and starring Milton Sills, Alice Lake and Gertrude Claire.Munden p.216 Synopsis As part of her rehabilitation, a reformed female crook is sent to work for a man who was robbed by her partners. Irving Cummings
Irving Caminsky (October 9, 1888 – April 18, 1959) was an American movie actor and director. Career Born in New York City, Cummings started his acting career at age 16 in ''Diplomacy''. His Broadway, performances included ''In the Long Run'' (1909) and ''Object -- Matrimony'' (1916). Acting in the Proctor Stock Company, Cummings appeared with Lillian Russell and other actresses. He entered into movies in 1909, acting with the P. A. Powers company in Mount Vernon, New York, and quickly became a popular leading man. Few of the films he made as an actor are easily available, except for Buster Keaton's first feature film, ''The Saphead'' (1920), in which Cummings plays a crooked stockbroker and Fred Niblo's film Sex (1920), one of the first films to depict a new phenomenon in 1920s America, the Flapper. Ralph Lewis (actor)
Ralph Percy Lewis (October 8, 1872 – December 4, 1937) was an American actor of the silent film era. Born in 1872 in Englewood, Illinois, Lewis attended Northwestern University. Lewis appeared in 160 films between 1912 and 1938. The character actor remains perhaps best remembered for his role as abolitionist U.S. Representative Austin Stoneman in D. W. Griffith's ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915) and the governor in '' Intolerance'' (1916). Lewis's film debut came in 1912. He also starred in one of the early Hollywood sound shorts, ''Gaunt'', in 1931. He was married to actress Vera Lewis. Lewis died in Los Angeles, California, on December 4, 1937, after being hit on November 25, 1937 by a limousine driven by a chauffeur working for Jack L. Warner. Sol Lesser
Sol Lesser (February 17, 1890 – September 19, 1980) was an American film producer. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 and was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1961. Biography In 1913, while living in San Francisco, Sol Lesser learned that the authorities were about to clean out the Barbary Coast district, a raucous area of gambling houses, saloons and brothels. He grabbed a camera and a friend, future Hollywood cameraman Hal Mohr, and roamed the area, especially the parts that were best-known before the area was shut down. (The Barbary Coast was not actually closed down until 1917.) This film is now considered a lost film. The resulting film was ''The Last Night of the Barbary Coast'', an early example of an exploitation film that was sold directly to movie theater owners by Lesser. Crime Film
Crime films, in the broadest sense, is a film genre inspired by and analogous to the crime fiction literary genre. Films of this genre generally involve various aspects of crime and its detection. Stylistically, the genre may overlap and combine with many other genres, such as drama or gangster film, but also include comedy, and, in turn, is divided into many sub-genres, such as mystery, suspense or noir. Screenwriter and scholar Eric R. Williams identified crime film as one of eleven super-genres in his Screenwriters Taxonomy, claiming that all feature-length narrative films can be classified by these super-genres. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
