Enrique Laguerre
Enrique Arturo Laguerre Vélez (July 15, 1905 – June 16, 2005) was a teacher, novelist, playwright, critic, and newspaper columnist from Moca, Puerto Rico. He is the author of the 1935 novel ''La Llamarada'' (), which has been for many years obligatory reading in many literature courses in Puerto Rico. Biography Laguerre studied at various universities, obtaining degrees in arts from the University of Puerto Rico and Columbia University. In 1924, he took courses on teaching in rural areas in the town of Aguadilla. The courses were taught by Carmen Gómez Tejera. After this, he taught from 1925 to 1988, both at the elementary school and university levels. Laguerre was known to use the pen-names of Tristán Ronda, Luis Urayoán, Motial and Alberto Prado, among others. Married for many years to the well-respected writer Luz V. Aceitunas
Aceitunas () is a Barrios of Puerto Rico, barrio in the municipality of Moca, Puerto Rico with a population of 3,098 in 2010. The land area of this subdivision is . A neighborhood within Aceitunas barrio called Aceitunas community had a total population of 1,436 people in 2010, living in . History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an Insular area, unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Aceitunas barrio was 1,067. Culebrinas River flooding In late May 2019, Aceitunas and multiple other areas in various municipalities suffered flooding, felled trees, landslides and closed highways when Culebrinas River flooded. Manuel Zeno Gandía
Manuel Zeno Gandía (January 10, 1855 – January 30, 1930) was a Puerto Rican physician, poet, novelist, journalist and politician. He is best known as the author of ''La Charca'' (The Pond), a novel considered by many to be the first Puerto Rican novel. Early years Zeno Gandía was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to wealthy land-owning parents. After receiving his primary and secondary education in his hometown, he went to Spain where he studied medicine at the University of Barcelona's school of medicine. He graduated with the titles of Doctor in Medicine and Surgeon. He developed his love for political literature during his stay in Spain. His interest in politics led him to become an outspoken advocate for Puerto Rican independence. Eduardo Neumann Gandia was his cousin.
