Enoch B. Talcott
Enoch B. Talcott (April 30, 1811 in Herkimer (village), New York, Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York – June 21, 1868 in Utica, New York, Utica, Oneida County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Enoch Talcott (1780–1814) and Lydia (Barton) Talcott. He graduated from Union College in 1836. Then he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Oswego, New York, Oswego. On July 6, 1842, he married Mary G. Doolittle, and they had six children. He was a member of the New York State Senate (5th D.) from 1845 to 1847, sitting in the 68th New York State Legislature, 68th, 69th New York State Legislature, 69th and 70th New York State Legislatures. He was Collector of Customs for the District of Oswego from May 1853 to March 1858. Herkimer is a Administrative divisions of New York#Village, village on the north side of the Mohawk River and the county seat of Herkimer County, New York, Herkimer County, New York (state), New York, United States, approximately southeast of Utica, New York, Utica. Newport (village), New York
Newport is a village in Herkimer County, New York, United States. The population was 640 at the 2010 census. The village is in the eastern part of the town of Newport and is northeast of Utica. History The early community was known as the "Bowen Settlement", after its founder Benjamin Bowen. He purchased the land around 1788 and began improvements and invited settlers to purchase land. The village was incorporated in 1857. It was then an important cheese center. Newport was the home of Algernon Smith (1842 – 1876), an officer in the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment who was killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Herkimer County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,139. Its county seat is Herkimer. The county was created in 1791 north of the Mohawk River out of part of Montgomery County. It is named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from battle wounds in 1777 after taking part in the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War. Herkimer County is part of the Utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1791, Herkimer County was created as one of three counties split off from Montgomery (the other two being Otsego and Tioga counties) as New York State was developed after the American Revolutionary War. The 70th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 5 to December 15, 1847, during the first year of John Young's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1821, 32 Senators were elected on general tickets in eight senatorial districts for four-year terms. They were divided into four classes, and every year eight Senate seats came up for election. Assemblymen were elected countywide on general tickets to a one-year term, the whole Assembly being renewed annually. On May 13, 1845, an "Act recommending a Convention of the people of this State" was passed, submitting at the next State election to the people the question whether they wanted to call a convention to amend the State Constitution.
