County Fermanagh
County Fermanagh ( ; ) is one of the thirty-two counties of Ireland, one of the nine counties of Ulster and one of the six counties of Northern Ireland. The county covers an area of 1,691 km2 (653 sq mi) and has a population of 61,805 as of 2011. Enniskillen is the county town and largest in both size and population. Fermanagh is one of four counties of Northern Ireland to have a majority of its population from a Catholic background, according to the 2011 census. Enniskillen By-election, 1806 (March)
Enniskillen ( , from ga, Inis Ceithleann , ' Ceithlenn's island') is the largest town in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the middle of the county, between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It had a population of 13,823 at the 2011 Census. Enniskillen Castle was built in the 15th century as a stronghold of the Maguires, before coming under English control in the early 17th century. The castle and town were expanded during the Plantation of Ulster. It was the seat of local government for the former Fermanagh District Council, and is the county town of Fermanagh. Toponymy The town's name comes from the ga, Inis Ceithleann. This refers to Cethlenn, a figure in Irish mythology who may have been a goddess. Local legend has it that Cethlenn was wounded in battle by an arrow and attempted to swim across the River Erne, which surrounds the island, but she never reached the other side, so the island was named in reference to her. Richard Magenis (died 1831)
Lt.-Col. Richard Magenis ( – 6 March 1831) was an Anglo-Irish Unionist politician who sat in the Irish House of Commons and British House of Commons for Enniskillen. Magenis represented Enniskillen in the Irish Parliament from 1790 to 1797. Following the Union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801, he represented Enniskillen as a Tory from 26 October 1812 to 29 January 1828. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Fermanagh Militia. Magenis, whose surname is also spelt Magennis or Maginnis, was Anglo-Irish gentry, member of Magenis of Finvoy Lodge. He was the eldest son of Richard Magenis and his second wife, Elizabeth Berkeley, daughter of Col. William Berkeley and sister of George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne. He was the elder brother of the Very Rev. William Magenis, Dean of Kilmore. The 1812 United Kingdom general election was the fourth general election to be held after the Union of Great Britain and Ireland. Nathaniel Sneyd
Nathaniel Sneyd (c. 1767 – 31 July 1833) was an Irish politician, landowner and businessman He was a Member of the Parliament of Ireland representing the Carrick constituency from 1794 to 1800 and was High Sheriff of Cavan in 1795. He briefly represented the Cavan County Parliament of Ireland constituency which was succeeded after the Union with Great Britain in 1800 by the Cavan Westminster constituency, which he represented from 1801 until 1826. In general election of 1806 he contested two constituencies for Parliament, winning both and choosing to represent Cavan over Enniskillen.
