English (play)
''English'' is a play by Sanaz Toossi. The play explores themes of language, identity, and cultural assimilation, set in an English-language classroom in Karaj, Iran, in 2008. The play won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize#Letters, drama, and music, 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play premiered Off-Broadway at the Linda Gross Theatre by the Atlantic Theater Company in 2022 followed by several productions in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Minneapolis and San Diego, having its Broadway theatre, Broadway debout at the Roundabout Theatre Company's Todd Haimes Theatre in 2025. The original Off-Broadway and Broadway productions received positive reviews by theatre critics, also prising Tala Ashe and Marjan Neshat acting performances. Sanaz Toossi
Sanaz Toossi (born 1991/1992) is an American playwright and screenwriter. Her play ''English (play), English'' won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2023. Life and career Toossi was born in Orange County, California, Orange County, California, where she grew up. She is of Iranian descent; her father, an engineer, emigrated to the United States before the Iranian Revolution and her mother, a chemist, did so afterward. She is an only child, spoke Persian language, Persian in her family home and English outside it, and visited Iran regularly when she was growing up. She grew up a self-described "weird theatre kid." Toossi earned her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, majoring in pre-law. She said that she decided to change her career plan from law to playwriting after seeing a performance of Amy Herzog, Amy Herzog's ''4000 Miles'' at the South Coast Repertory. Guthrie Theater
The Guthrie Theater, founded in 1963, is a center for theater performance, production, education, and professional training in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The concept of the theater was born in 1959 in a series of discussions among Sir Tyrone Guthrie, Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler. Goodman Theatre
Goodman Theatre is a professional theater company located in Chicago's Loop. A major part of the Chicago theatre scene, it is the city's oldest currently active nonprofit theater organization.
