Engle, New Mexico
Engle is an unincorporated community in Sierra County, New Mexico. Engle was a station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and New Mexico State Road 51 passes through the community. Elephant Butte Reservoir and Truth or Consequences lie to the west and the San Andres Mountains are to the east. History El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro passed through the vicinity of Engle; two former segments of the road near Engle are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. West of Engle is Engle Lake originally known as the ''Laguna del Muerto'' (Lake of the Dead Man). It was a paraje, one of the few along this route through the Jornada del Muerto with reliable seasonal water and grass that grew on the lake bottom following the retreating waters of the evaporating lake. If the lake was dry, stock had to be driven to water at the spring Ojo del Muerto, six miles west in the Fra Cristobal Range. San Andres Mountains
The San Andres Mountains are a mountain range in the southwestern U.S. state of New Mexico, in the counties of Socorro, Sierra, and Doña Ana. The range extends about 75 miles (120 km) north to south, but are only about 12 miles (19 km) wide at their widest. The highest peak in the San Andres Mountains is Salinas Peak, at 8,965 feet (2,733 m). Geography Though nearly contiguous with the Organ Mountains to the south, separated by St. Augustine Pass (elevation and U.S. Highway 70, the two are very distinct geologically and botanically. Rudd Weatherwax
Ruddell Bird "Rudd" Weatherwax (September 23, 1907 – February 25, 1985) was an American actor, animal trainer, and breeder. He and his brother Frank are best remembered for training dogs for motion pictures and television. Their collie, Pal, became the original Lassie, handled by Rudd for the 1943 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film ''Lassie Come Home''. He also handled the dogs for the ''Lassie'' television series which ran from 1954 to 1974, and trained Spike for the 1957 feature film ''Old Yeller''. After his death, his son, Robert, took over the training of the animals. Weatherwax was also responsible for training the official New York Mets’ team mascot in the 1960s, a beagle named Homer. Fra Cristobal Range
The Fra Cristobal Range, (Fra Cristóbal Range) is a 17 mi (27 km) long, mountain range in central-north Sierra County, New Mexico. Its northern extreme above Fra Cristoblal Mountain extends into Socorro County. The range borders the eastern shore of Elephant Butte Reservoir on the Rio Grande, and the range lies towards the southwest of the Jornada del Muerto, the desert region east of the river. Description The Fra Cristobal Range is an arid, moderate elevation, north–south trending mountain range, about 17 mi long and narrow, only about 7 mi at its widest. Crater Hill, lies west of the central ridgeline, and north of Black Bluffs, Red Cliff at the Reservoir. Jornada Del Muerto
The name Jornada del Muerto translates from Spanish as "Single Day's Journey of the Dead Man" or even "Route of the Dead Man, though the modern literal translation is closer to "The Working Day of the Dead". It was the name given by the Spanish conquistadors to the Jornada del Muerto Desert Endorheic basin, basin, and the particularly dry stretch of a route through it from Las Cruces, New Mexico, Las Cruces to Socorro, New Mexico. Paraje, a Spanish term meaning in English place or spot. Paraje is a term from the original Spanish speaking settlers, in use among English speakers in the southwestern United States, particularly in New Mexico, that refers to a camping place along a long distance trail where travelers customarily stopped for the night. It lies at an elevation or in the depression in the Jornada Del Muerto basin.
