The England Boxing National Amateur Championships previously known as the ABA Championships is the premier boxing tournament hosted annually by England Boxing. The Championships are 'open' class: any Boxing, boxer who is registered with a club registered with England Boxing (aged over 17 years by the 1 October) can enter. History The inaugural Championships were held (over one day) on 18 April 1880 at St James Hall, London at four weight categories: Featherweight (57 kg), Lightweight (60 kg), Middleweight (75 kg), and Heavyweight (91 kg). 1884 saw the introduction of a fifth weight category (Bantamweight, 54 kg). In 1920 three additional weight categories were introduced taking it to 8 weight categories in all. These extra weights were: Flyweight (51 kg), Welterweight (69 kg), and Light heavyweight (81 kg). Randolph Adolphus Turpin (7 June 1928 – 17 May 1966), better known as Randy Turpin, was a British boxer in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1951 he became world middleweight champion when he defeated Sugar Ray Robinson. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. Early life Randolph Turpin was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, to a black father Lionel who was born in British Guyana now known as Guyana in 1896. He had come to England to fight in the First World War. He had met Randolph's mother after coming out of hospital following treatment for his injuries sustained towards the end of the war. During his service he had fought at the battle of the Somme. He died within a year of Randolph's birth, having never really recovered from the lung damage caused by a gas attack. Henry Hall (6 September 1922 – 1979) was a British boxer who was British welterweight champion between 1948 and 1949. Career From Sheffield, Hall had success as an amateur, winning the 1944 Amateur Boxing Association British welterweight title, when boxing out of the Hillsborough ABC, before making his professional début in February 1945 with a win over Bob Moorcroft. Initially a welterweight, he won his first 15 fights before losing in April 1946 to Scottish Area champion Ginger Stewart. In September 1946 he met Stewart again in an eliminator for the British title, again losing. Over the next 18 months he won nine fights but lost to Harry Lazar, Eddie Thomas, and Tommy Armour. He had a second title eliminator in March 1948, this time against Willie Whyte, winning via a 10th round knockout. He beat Swiss Champion Rock Gianola in May, and beat Armour in a final eliminator in August to set up a title fight against Ernie Roderick in November, which had initially been delayed ...
