Commonwealth Games England (CGE) is the national Commonwealth Games Association for England. The council is responsible for supporting and managing the participation of England at the Commonwealth Games, Team England at the Commonwealth Games'. Maurice Dennis
Maurice Dennis (1913–1962) was an amateur and professional boxer from Camden Town, England. He boxed between 1938 and 1940 an had 14 professional contests. Biography Dennis won the 1937 Amateur Boxing Association British middleweight title, when boxing out of the Northampton Polytechnic ABC. Richard Webster (athlete)
Brigadier Frederick Richard Webster (31 December 1914 – 28 September 2009) was a British Army officer and Olympic pole vaulter. Sports career Educated at Bedford School and Christ's College, Cambridge, Webster competed in both the 1936 Olympics and the 1948 Olympics. He held the British pole vaulting record between 1936 and 1950. He also competed for England in the pole vault at the 1934 British Empire Games in London and four years later he competed for England at the 1938 British Empire Games in the pole vault again. He was the 1936 and 1939 AAA champion. Personal life Webster served as an officer in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, was evacuated from Dunkirk, and fought in North Africa and Italy. After the war, he worked as a military instructor in Egypt, retiring from the army with the rank of brigadier in 1967. Peter Hans Dudley Ward (7 February 1913 – 13 January 2009) was an English athlete who competed for Great Britain in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Career He was born in Berlin, German Empire to an English father and German mother. He studied Economics at the University of Cambridge and won a blue for athletics and a half-blue for cross-country. He was selected for the 1936 Olympics after setting a new 5,000 metres games record at the 1935 International Universities Games in Budapest and a new 3 miles record at the 1936 AAA championship. In 1936 he finished eleventh the 1500 metres event, narrowly beating out fellow English runner Mike O'Donnell. At the 1938 British Empire Games he won the silver medal in the 3 miles competition. Lawrence Mervyn Wallace (9 March 1917 – 1978) was an English amateur athlete who competed as a sprinter in the 1938 British Empire Games and played football for Southampton. Early life Wallace was born in Sandown on the Isle of Wight and studied at Southampton's University College. Athletic career At the 1938 Empire Games, he was a member of the English relay team which won the silver medal in the 4×110 yards event. In the 100 yards competition as well as in the 220 yards contest he was eliminated in the heats. Football career Wallace was selected to represent the Universities Athletic Union against an Amateur XI in a football match played at The Dell in February 1939. Dorothy Tyler-Odam
Dorothy Jennifer Beatrice Tyler, MBE (née Odam; 14 March 1920 – 25 September 2014) was a British athlete who competed mainly in the high jump. She was born in Stockwell, London. Odam competed for Great Britain in the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany where she won the silver medal behind Ibolya Csák. She jumped the highest and was the first to clear 1.60 meters, and would have won under modern countback rules, but under the 1936 rulebook a jump-off was called for, and Csák won the gold. In 1939 she broke the world record in the high jump with 1.66m, but Germany's Dora Ratjen allegedly broke her record quickly. Odam was suspicious of Ratjen and, according to Odam, "They wrote to me telling me I didn't hold the record, so I wrote to them saying, 'She's not a woman, she's a man'. Dorothy Saunders
Dorothy Sylvia Saunders (later Jackson; 22 January 1915 – 12 November 2013) was an English track and field athlete who competed in the 1938 British Empire Games. Saunders was born in Brentford, Middlesex in January 1915. At the 1938 Empire Games she was a member of the English relay team which won the silver medal in the 220-110-220-110 yards event and the bronze medal in the 110-220-110 yards competition. In the 100 yards contest as well as in the 220 yards event she was eliminated in the semi-finals. She also competed in the 1938 European Championships in Athletics held in Vienna and finished fourth in the 100 metre contest and fifth in the 200 metre event. In April 1942, she married Harold F. Jackson in Brentford. Saunders died in Devon in November 2013 at the age of 98.
