Engineering Projects In Community Service
Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) was founded in 1995 at Purdue University by Professors Edward Coyle and Leah Jamieson as a solution to two problems. First, many engineering graduates lacked real world skills need for project management, such as budgeting and scheduling. Second, many non-profit organizations did not have funding for needed professional engineering services to design displays and exhibits or keep relevant databases. The solution was to use the skills of undergraduate students through the curriculum to provide services to local non-profit organizations. The program originally started as an educational program, and finds its roots in the concept of "service learning". In liberal arts colleges, EPICS courses manage to encourage enrollment from students from outside the engineering program. Edward Coyle
Edward J. Coyle is an American paralympic weightlifter. He competed at the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Summer Paralympics. Biography Coyle was born in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. He contracted polio at the age of two. He attended Monsignor Bonner High School, where he was on the football and rowing teams before taking up weightlifting. He attended West Chester University, earning a PhD in 1977. Coyle competed at the 1972 Summer Paralympics, winning the gold medal in the men's middleweight weightlifting. At the 1976 Summer Paralympics Coyle won the gold medal in the men's lightweight event. He scored 177.5 pounds. Leah Jamieson
Leah H. Jamieson (born August 27, 1949, in Trenton, NJ, USA) is an American engineering educator, currently the Ransburg Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. Jamieson was a founder of the Engineering Projects in Community Service program (EPICS), a multi-university engineering design program that operates in a service-learning context. She is a recipient of the Gordon Prize. From 2006-2017, she served as the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering at Purdue. Jamieson was elected a member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2005 for innovations in integrating engineering education and community service.
