Engelmann Peak
Engelmann Peak is a high mountain summit in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The thirteener is located in Arapaho National Forest, west by south ( bearing 261°) of the Town of Empire in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. The mountain was named in honor of the botanist George Engelmann.White, Charles A. Memoir of George Engelmann. 1896. National Academy of Sciences (U.S.) Biographical Memoirs. volume 4. pages 1-22. see p. 19 The mountain is named for George Engelmann (1809-1884) a famous botanist responsible for describing and naming flora in the Rocky Mountains. He was born and educated in Germany and received his medical degree there. In 1832, he sailed to America. His financial backing had come from relatives in Germany who wanted him to invest in the lands of the new country so he explored areas in Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. George Engelmann
George Engelmann, also known as Georg Engelmann, (2 February 1809 – 4 February 1884) was a German-American botanist. He was instrumental in describing the flora of the west of North America, then very poorly known to Europeans; he was particularly active in the Rocky Mountains and northern Mexico, one of his constant companions being another German-American, the botanical illustrator Paulus Roetter. Biography Origins George Engelmann was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, the oldest of thirteen children, nine of whom reached maturity. His father, Julius Bernhardt Engelmann, was a member of a family from which for several successive generations were chosen ministers for the Reformed Church at Bacharach-on-the-Rhine. Julius was a graduate of the University of Halle, and was also educated for the ministry, but he devoted his life to education. Empire, Colorado
The historic Town of Empire is a Statutory Town located in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 345 at the 2020 United States Census, a +22.34% increase since the 2010 United States Census. The town is a former mining settlement that flourished during the Colorado Silver Boom in the late 19th century. Empire is now a part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Front Range Urban Corridor. It is located in the valley of Clear Creek west of Denver, on the north side of the valley. The town consists of several commercial establishments and residents.
