''Endospermum medullosum'', commonly known as the whitewood, is a dioecious plant that grows in the tropical islands. It grows in tropical humid climates. The species is well known for timber. Distribution ''Endospermum medullosum'' grows naturally in the tropical islands including New Guinea, Indonesia, as well as the Solomon Islands which are east of New Guinea. The tree is also native to Vanuatu, an island chain east-northeast of Australia. Habitat and ecology ''Endospermum'' grows in humid lowland tropical climates where the temperature averages 22–28 degrees Celsius, with a mean rainfall of 1500–5600 mm annually. The species can grow in a variety of soil including soil that has been deposited by water flow next to rivers. Typically the plant grows in acidic to neutral soil. Lindsay Stewart Smith
Lindsay Stuart Smith (27 November 1917 – 12 September 1970) was an Australian botanist, naturalist and public servant. Early years Lindsay Smith was born in Bundaberg in Queensland and attended Bundaberg South State School and later Bundaberg State High School. In 1933 he began work as a clerk in the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock. Except for war service with the Second Australian Imperial Force in World War II, he remained in that department, rising through the ranks to the position of Senior Botanist. After the war, he studied science in the evenings and in 1948 was awarded the degree of First Class Honours in Botany. Career During World War II, Smith made collections of rainforest species in New Guinea and subsequently studied these species with the help of C.T. White and W.D. A locule (plural locules) or loculus (plural loculi) (meaning "little place" in Latin) is a small cavity or compartment within an organ or part of an organism (animal, plant, or fungus).
