Encino ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Brooks County, Texas, United States. It is south of the county seat of Falfurrias. The population was 143 at the 2010 census. It is the site of a United States Border Patrol interior checkpoint. Geography Encino is located at . The community is situated along U.S. Highway 281 (Future Interstate 69C), south of Falfurrias in southern Brooks County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 177 people, 61 households, and 48 families residing in the CDP. The population density was . There were 92 housing units at an average density of 13.6/sq mi (5.3/km2). Interstate 69C
Interstate 69C (I-69C) is a north–south freeway running through South Texas. Once complete, the freeway (with connections to Mexican Federal Highway 97) will begin at I-2/ U.S. Highway 83 (US 83) in Pharr and head northward before terminating at I-69W/ US 59 in George West near I-37. Its subject is the passage of illegal migrants through Brooks County, Texas, and specifically how thousands die of dehydration and exposure hiking some 35 miles (56 km) across open fields in 100 °F (38 °C) heat, to avoid the Border Patrol internal checkpoint near Falfurrias, Texas. The ground is sandy and taxing to walk in, and lack of landmarks makes it easy for migrants to get lost and go in circles.
