Encinal, New Mexico
Encinal is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cibola County, New Mexico, United States. It is the smallest of the six villages of the Laguna Pueblo and sits at the base of Mount Taylor. The population was 210 at the 2010 census. The feast day for Encinal is September 8. Geography Encinal is located in northeastern Cibola County at (35.116923, -107.463544). It is northeast of Cubero and northeast of Exit 104 on Interstate 40. Picacho Peak, known locally as Elephant Rock, is a large rock formation to the west of the village. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 200 people, 58 households, and 48 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 14.7 people per square mile (5.7/km2). There were 67 housing units at an average density of 4.9 per square mile (1.9/km2). A census-designated place (CDP) is a concentration of population defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. CDPs have been used in each decennial census since 1980 as the counterparts of incorporated places, such as self-governing cities, towns, and villages, for the purposes of gathering and correlating statistical data. CDPs are populated areas that generally include one officially designated but currently unincorporated community, for which the CDP is named, plus surrounding inhabited countryside of varying dimensions and, occasionally, other, smaller unincorporated communities as well. CDPs include small rural communities, edge cities, colonias located along the Mexico–United States border, and unincorporated resort and retirement communities and their environs. Elephants are the largest existing land animals. Three living species are currently recognised: the African bush elephant, the African forest elephant, and the Asian elephant. They are the only surviving members of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. The order was formerly much more diverse during the Pleistocene, but most species became extinct during the Late Pleistocene epoch. Distinctive features of elephants include a long proboscis called a trunk, tusks, large ear flaps, pillar-like legs, and tough but sensitive skin. The trunk is used for breathing, bringing food and water to the mouth, and grasping objects. Tusks, which are derived from the incisor teeth, serve both as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. The large ear flaps assist in maintaining a constant body temperature as well as in communication.
