Enchanted Rocks Preserve
Enchanted Rocks Preserve is a nature preserve owned and managed by The Wildlands Conservancy, a nonprofit land conservancy. Spanning over in Jefferson County, Oregon, northwest of Mitchell, the preserve includes a section of the National Wild and Scenic John Day River. It is part of the organization's collection of natural lands, and more preserves can be found in the list of preserves. Recreation In the future, there will be hiking and fishing opportunities. Geography The preserve includes of the John Day River and of Cherry Creek. Flora and Fauna Wildlife includes Rocky Mountain elk, bald eagles, and beavers. History In 2022, The Wildlands Conservancy acquired the Cherry Creek Ranch, creating the first Wildlands Conservancy preserve in Oregon. Jefferson County, Oregon
Jefferson County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. At the 2020 census, the population was 24,502. The county seat is Madras. The county is named after Mount Jefferson. History Jefferson County was created on December 12, 1914, from a portion of Crook County. The county owes much of its agricultural prosperity to the railroad, which links Madras with the Columbia River, and was completed in 1911, and to the development of irrigation projects in the late 1930s. The railroad was completed despite constant feuds and battles between two lines working on opposite sides of the Deschutes River. Madras was incorporated in 1911, and has been the permanent county seat since a general election in 1916. The first (temporary) county seat was Culver, which was selected by a three-man commission appointed by the governor. Mitchell, Oregon
Mitchell is a city in Wheeler County, Oregon, United States. The population was 130 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1873 and was named after John H. Mitchell, a politician. The Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is about northwest of Mitchell. Mitchell School, a public school with an enrollment of about 70 students, is in Mitchell. History Foundation At the request of William "Brawdie" Johnson, a blacksmith, a post office was established at Mitchell in 1873. Johnson, the first postmaster, suggested the name ''Mitchell'' after John Hipple Mitchell, a U.S. Senator from Oregon. Senator Mitchell held the office in 1873−1879, 1885−1897, and 1901−1905. Platted in 1885, the community was incorporated in 1893. In 1872 the first school in Wheeler County was established near Mitchell, and in 1874 it was relocated into the town itself. The Wildlands Conservancy
The Wildlands Conservancy (TWC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve land for public recreation. It operates 23 preserves in California and Oregon. The preserve system comprises 210,686 acres including mountains, valleys, deserts, rivers and oceanfront lands. TWC buys land, restores land, builds public visitor facilities and provides outdoor education programs for children. All usage (hiking, camping, education programs) is free of charge. There are over 1 million visitors annually. Preserve System Summary History The California Desert Protection Act of 1994 established two national parks, one national preserve and 69 wilderness areas. John Day River
The John Day River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately long, in northeastern Oregon in the United States. It is known as the Mah-Hah River by the Cayuse people, the original inhabitants of the region. Undammed along its entire length, the river is the fourth longest free-flowing river in the contiguous United States. There is extensive use of its waters for irrigation.
