Emrah Safa Gürkan
Emrah Safa Gürkan (born 16 January 1981) is a Turkish historian, professor of Ottoman studies and academic. Academic career Having received his B.A. in International Affairs at Bilkent University (2003), Gürkan wrote his M.A. thesis titled ''Ottoman Corsairs in the Western Mediterranean and Their Place in the Ottoman-Habsburg Rivalry, 1505-1535'' with Halil Inalcık (2006). He then moved to Georgetown University where he completed his Ph.D with a dissertation on early modern espionage (''Espionage in the 16th Century Mediterranean: Secret Diplomacy, Mediterranean Go-Betweens and the Ottoman-Habsburg Rivalry,'' 2012). Gürkan studies the early modern Mediterranean with a focus on espionage, piracy, slavery, religious conversion, naval technology and the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and the West. Halil İnalcık
Halil İnalcık (7 September 1916 – 25 July 2016) was a Turkish historian. His highly influential research centered on social and economic approaches to the Ottoman Empire. His academic career started at Ankara University, where he completed his PhD and worked between 1940 and 1972. Between 1972 and 1986 he taught Ottoman history at the University of Chicago. From 1994 on he taught at Bilkent University, where he founded the history department. He was a founding member of Eurasian Academy. Biography He was born in Istanbul on 7 September 1916 to a Crimean Tatar family that left Crimea for the city in 1905. He attended Balıkesir Teacher Training School, and then Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of History, from which he graduated in 1940. Turkish Academy Of Sciences
The Turkish Academy of Sciences ( tr, Türkiye Bilimler Akademisi – TÜBA) is an autonomous scholarly association aimed at promoting scientific activities in Turkey. Although it is attached to the office of the Prime Minister and is largely funded by the government, it maintains financial and administrative autonomy. The academy is headquartered in Ankara.
