Empire Stadium (Gżira)
The Empire Stadium, also known as the Gżira Stadium or just The Stadium, was a multi-purpose stadium in Gżira, Malta. It was used mostly for Association football, football matches and hosted the home matches of the Malta national football team, Maltese national football team, including the very first international match for Malta in 1957 against Austria national football team, Austria. It also hosted the final of the Maltese Cup. The stadium was able to hold 30,000 spectators and originally opened in 1922. It was notorious for its sandy pitch. The stadium hosted its final game in 1981, being replaced by the modern Ta' Qali Stadium. History The stadium opened on 4 November 1922. Gżira
Gżira ( mt, Il-Gżira) is a town in the Central Region of Malta. It is located between Msida and Sliema, also bordering on Ta' Xbiex. It has a population of 8,029 as of March 2014. The word ''Gżira'' means "island" in Maltese, and the town is named after Manoel Island which lies just adjacent to the town. The seafront of Gżira has views of the walled city of Valletta, which are illuminated at night, forming a backdrop to Manoel Island, the yacht marina and a seafront public garden. Kappara is located close to Gżira. The Orpheum Theatre is located in Gżira. Town history In the mid-19th century a villa was built in Gżira by Chevalier Jacob Tagliaferro. Wiener Sport-Club
The Wiener Sport-Club, sometimes abbreviated as WSC, was established in 1883 in Vienna, Austria and is one of the country's oldest athletics clubs. Their traditional home is in the Dornbach quarter of the city ( 17th district). History At various times throughout its history the club has had departments for fencing, boxing, wrestling, cycling, handball, track and field, field hockey, tennis, squash, football and water polo. Ta' Qali is a wide open space in the limits of Attard and Mosta in central and northern Malta respectively, which contains the national football stadium, the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre, Ta' Qali National Park, a crafts village, and a national vegetable market which is locally known as the ''Pitkalija''. Shortly before World War II, the area was used to build a military aerodrome and a station for the Royal Air Force (RAF), which the British called RAF Ta Kali; Maltese place names were often corrupted in this fashion. Manoel Island Football Ground
The Manoel Island Football Ground was a stadium in Manoel Island, Gżira, Malta. It was used mostly for football matches. History During the summer of 1965, the Malta Football Association together with the affiliated clubs decided not to play at Empire Stadium following an argument with the management over the distribution of gate-money. Following lengthy discussions, the Association decided to transfer all football activities for the 1965/66 football season to the Manoel Island Football Ground. The stadium was regarded as unsuitable to host league football matches as the lack of security at the ground made it easy for the fans to cause trouble. This caused a number of matches to be abandoned and for the said season to go down in history "as one of the most ill-fated competitions in the history of Maltese football".
