Empire Award For Best British Actor
The Empire Award for Best British Actor was an Empire Award presented annually by the British film magazine ''Empire'' to honor a British actor who has delivered an outstanding performance in a leading role while working within the film industry. The Empire Award for Best British Actor was first introduced at the 1st Empire Awards ceremony in 1996 with Ewan McGregor receiving the award for his role in ''Shallow Grave'' and last presented at the 10th Empire Awards ceremony in 2005. It was one of three Best British awards retired that year (the others being Best British Actress and Best British Director). Winners were voted by the readers of ''Empire'' magazine. Since its inception, the award has been given to six actors. Ewan McGregor had received the most awards in this category with four awards and was nominated on seven occasions, more than any other actor. ''Empire'' is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Verlagsgruppe, Bauer Consumer Media. The first issue was published in May 1989. History David Hepworth of Emap, the publisher of British music magazines ''Q magazine, Q'' and ''Smash Hits'', among other titles, came up with the idea to publish a magazine similar to ''Q'', but for films. They recruited ''Smash Hits'' editor Barry McIlheney to edit the new magazine, with Hepworth as Editorial Director. Hepworth produced a one-page document of what he wanted to achieve. Among them, they planned to review and rate every film that was released in the cinema in the United Kingdom. 2nd Empire Awards
The 2nd Empire Awards ceremony, presented by the British film magazine ''Empire'', honored the best films of 1996 and took place on 5 March 1997 at the Park Lane Hotel in London, England. During the ceremony, ''Empire'' presented Empire Awards in nine categories as well as two honorary awards. The award for Best British Director and the honorary Empire Inspiration Award were first introduced this year. The awards were sponsored by Miller Brewing Company.
