Emma F. Langdon
Emma Florence Langdon (1875 – November 29, 1937) moved to the gold mining district of Cripple Creek, Colorado in 1903. She was an apprentice linotype operator who wrote that "women's place should be in the home and not in public life."All That Glitters—Class, Conflict, and Community in Cripple Creek, Elizabeth Jameson, 1998, page 240. In spite of such sentiments, she played a very visible role during some very turbulent times. She and her husband were working at the Victor ''Daily Record'', a pro-union newspaper, during a 1903-04 strike of miners in the Cripple Creek gold fields that erupted into the Colorado Labor Wars. Along with many other union sympathizers, Langdon was forced to leave in 1904, and moved to Denver. Thomas Noel (historian)
Thomas Jacob Noel, (born 6 May 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts) often introduced in media interviews as Dr. Colorado, is an American historian specializing in the history of the Rocky Mountain West, and especially of the state of Colorado. He is a professor of history at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he teaches classes in the history of the American West, Colorado, Denver, historic preservation, mining and railroads, national parks, and Western art and architecture. He is the co-author or author of more than fifty books, numerous articles, and newspaper columns. He is the director of the Center for Colorado Studies at the Denver Public Library. The center provides many resources for students including Colorado books, book reviews, short-documentaries, as well as Native American, Hispanic, and other resource guides. Cripple Creek Miners' Strike Of 1894
The Cripple Creek miners' strike of 1894 was a five-month strike action, strike by the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Cripple Creek, Colorado, United States. It resulted in a victory for the trade union, union and was followed in 1903 by the Colorado Labor Wars. It is notable for being the only time in United States history when a state militia (United States), militia was called out (May/June 1894) in support of striking workers.Philpott, p. 26. John Calderwood
John Calderwood was a Scottish-born American miner, and influential labor union leader, who led miners organized by the Western Federation of Miners to victory in the Cripple Creek miners' strike of 1894. Little is known about his parentage or life. Early years Calderwood was born in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, and went to work in the local coal mines at the age of nine while attending public night school. After emigrating to the United States at age 17, he attended Mckeesport School of Mines in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1876. After graduation, Calderwood settled in Colorado. He was elected president of a miners' union in Aspen. In November 1893, he traveled to Cripple Creek, Colorado at the behest of the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) to organize miners there.
