Emilia Gierczak
Emilia Gierczak (February 25, 1925 – March 17, 1945) was a Polish soldier of the Polish Armed Forces in the East during the Second World War. After being killed in combat, several streets and organisations were subsequently named after her in Poland. Career Emilia Gierczak was born in 1920 to Jozef and Leontyna Gierczak. They named her after national heroine Emilia Plater. After the start of the Second World War, and the invasion of the eastern states of Poland by the Soviet Union, Gierczak and her family were deported to Arkhangelsk, where she began working in a bakery. Both Gierczak and her father were inducted into the army. Gierzak trained at the Infantry Officers School in Ryazan, Russia. She was then posted as a second lieutenant to the "Emilia Plater" Independent Women's Battalion attached to the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division in 1943. Arkhangelsk (, ; rus, Арха́нгельск, p=ɐrˈxanɡʲɪlʲsk), also known in English as Archangel and Archangelsk, is a types of inhabited localities in Russia, city and the administrative center of Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. Wołyń Voivodeship (1921–1939)
Wołyń Voivodeship or Volhynian Voivodeship was an administrative region of interwar Poland (1918–1939) with an area of 35,754 km², 22 cities, and provincial capital in Łuck. Emilia Plater
Countess Emilia Broel-Plater ( lt, Emilija Pliaterytė; 13 November 1806 – 23 December 1831) was a Polish-Lithuanian (adjective), Polish–Lithuanian szlachta, noblewoman and revolutionary from the lands of the partitions of Poland, partitioned Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Raised in a patriotic tradition in Līksna near Daugavpils, she fought in the November Uprising of 1830–1831 against the Russian Empire. She raised a small unit, participated in several engagements in present-day Lithuania, and received the rank of Captain (land and air), captain in the Polish insurgent forces. When the main forces under the General Dezydery Chłapowski decided to cease fighting and cross into Prussia, Plater vowed to continue the fight and wanted to cross into Poland where the uprising was still ongoing.
