Emil Gottlieb Schuback
Emil Gottlieb Schuback (28 June 1820, in Hamburg – 14 March 1902, in Düsseldorf) was a German genre painter and lithographer. Biography He received his first painting lessons from Gerdt Hardorff at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums in Hamburg and became a member of the . At the age of sixteen, he went to Munich, where he studied with Peter von Cornelius and Heinrich Maria von Hess at the Academy of Fine Arts. Working with Cornelius led him to become involved with the Nazarene movement so, in 1844, he went to Rome to join a group of like-minded German artists there; including Heinrich Dreber, Günther Gensler and the sculptor, . He returned to Hamburg in 1848, where he focused on genre and history painting. In 1855, he moved to Düsseldorf to polish his skills, working with the famous genre artist, Rudolf Jordan, and becoming associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Günther Gensler
Johann Günther Gensler (28 February 1803, Hamburg - 28 May 1884, Hamburg) was a German etcher, illustrator and painter; primarily of portraits. His known work consists of over 120 oil paintings and drawings. Life and work His father was a goldsmith, who drew as a hobby. His younger brothers, lt=Jacob and , also became painters. All three would eventually become members of the , and Jacob served on the Board of Directors. They were also all members of the , a gymnastics society. He initially studied with Gerdt Hardorff, a friend of the family. Then, around 1822, he studied with Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein. By the mid-1820s, he and Martin were teaching art history and drawing at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums. According to documentary records, he was in Dresden in 1829, and travelled to Amsterdam in 1837, where he studied the works of Rembrandt and Bartholomeus van der Helst. Alte Kunsthalle (Düsseldorf)
Alte is a village and civil parish in the municipality of Loulé, in the Algarve region in the south of Portugal. The population in 2011 was 1,997, in an area of 94.33 km². Situated away from the coast, Alte is known as one of the most typical and unspoilt villages in the region of the Algarve. The village contains Algarve style whitewashed houses, traditional chimneys, and cobbled alleys. The Portuguese poet Cândido Guerreiro was born in Alte, in 1871. Church of Our Lady of the Assumption The Mother Church of Alte or Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is located at the centre of the village of Alte on Largo da Igreja. Malkasten
Malkasten (English: "Paintbox") is a progressive German artists' association, founded in Düsseldorf in 1848, during the March Revolution. Since 1867, their headquarters have been in the Pempelfort district. History During the unrest in 1848, artists also began to take part in political discussions. In August of that year, the held an event called the "Fest der Deutschen Einheit" (Festival for German Unity). Many artists and sculptors associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule took part in its artistic design. On the night of the celebration, they decided to establish an artist's association which, a few days later, they named "Malkasten", at the suggestion of Karl Hübner. The name was meant to express the equality of every "color"; artistic and political. Rudolf Jordan (painter)
Wilhelm Rudolf Jordan (4 May 1810, Berlin – 20 March 1887, Düsseldorf) was a German genre painter, illustrator, etcher and art teacher. Biography His father was a member of the Judicial Council and he was a descendant of Charles-Étienne Jordan; advisor to Frederick the Great. After completing his basic artistic studies with Karl Wilhelm Wach at his private school in Berlin, Jordan moved to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he took master classes with Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and Karl Ferdinand Sohn. In 1837, he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. He graduated from the Kunstakademie in 1840 and, from 1848, operated his own studio; creating genre scenes and giving lessons. Walter de Gruyter GmbH, known as De Gruyter (), is a German scholarly publishing house specializing in academic literature. History The roots of the company go back to 1749 when Frederick the Great granted the Königliche Realschule in Berlin the royal privilege to open a bookstore and "to publish good and useful books".
