Emil Cauer The Elder
Emil Cauer the Elder (29 November 1800, in Dresden – 4 August 1867, in Bad Kreuznach) was a German sculptor in the Classical style. Many of his children and grandchildren also became sculptors. Life and work He was born to Carl Ludwig Cauer (1750–1813), a general practitioner. After his father's death, his eldest brother, , took him to Berlin. There, in 1821, he enrolled at the Prussian Academy of Arts. The following year, he was employed in the studios of Christian Daniel Rauch. In 1824, he moved to Munich, but stayed there for only a year, then moved again to take a position as a drawing teacher at the University of Bonn. He was there for four years; focusing on portrait busts. In 1829, on Rauch's recommendation, he was named Curator of the Skulpturensammlung in Dresden. Martin Luther
Martin Luther (; ; 10 November 1483 – 18 February 1546) was a German priest, theologian, author, hymnwriter, and professor, and Order of Saint Augustine, Augustinian friar. He is the seminal figure of the Reformation, Protestant Reformation and the namesake of Lutheranism. Luther was ordained to the Priesthood in the Catholic Church, priesthood in 1507. He came to reject several teachings and practices of the Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Church; in particular, he disputed the view on indulgences. Luther proposed an academic discussion of the practice and efficacy of indulgences in his ''Ninety-five Theses'' of 1517. The Rheinland-Pfälzische Personendatenbank (People database of Rhineland-Palatinate, RPPD) is an internet database with short biographies of people who have lived or worked in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is being edited at four scientific libraries in Rhineland-Palatinate: Rheinische Landesbibliothek Koblenz, Pfälzische Landesbibliothek Speyer, Stadtbibliothek Mainz, Stadtbibliothek Trier. The RPPD is hosted by Rheinische Landesbibliothek Koblenz, a facility of the Landesbibliothekszentrums Rheinland-Pfalz. Content Research for the Rheinland-Pfälzische Bibliographie often results also in biographical data. In 2005 this developed into the idea for a separate database. Criteria The criterion for an entry is that a person was born on the territory of today's Rhineland-Palatinate (also before the establishment of the Bundesland in 1946) or has died there or has done some significant work there. Count Stanislaus Friedrich Ludwig von Kalckreuth (25 December 1820, Kozmin - 25 November 1894, Munich) was a German painter who specialized in mountain landscapes. Biography He was born into the Kalckreuth family of the Prussian nobility with roots in the early 13th century. After completing his primary education at the gymnasium in Leszno (then Polnisch Lissa), he was briefly a member of a cadet corps. At the age of twenty, he went to Potsdam and became an officer in the 1st Foot Guards, but served for only a short time, having decided on a career in art. From 1840 to 1844, he studied with Gustav Wegener, then went to Berlin, where he studied with and Karl Eduard Biermann. In 1845 he married Anna Eleanor Cauer (1829-1881), daughter of the sculptor Karl Cauer. Karl Cauer
Karl Ludwig Cauer (14 February 1828, Bonn - 17 April 1885, Bad Kreuznach) was a German sculptor in the Classicism, Classical style. Life and work His father, Emil Cauer the Elder, was a sculptor. His younger brother, Robert Cauer the Elder, Robert, became one as well. He and his wife, Magdalene (1828-1906) had seven children. Their five sons all became artists: Robert Cauer the Younger, Robert, Hugo (1864–1918), Ludwig Cauer, Ludwig and Emil Cauer the Younger, Emil were sculptors; was a painter. His daughter, Maria (1861-1928) married the composer, Arnold Mendelssohn. Robert Cauer the Elder (13 February 1831, Dresden - 2 April 1893, Kassel) was a German sculptor; known for his funerary art. Life and work His father, Emil Cauer the Elder and brother, Karl were both sculptors. Many of his descendants and relatives also became sculptors, including his sons, Stanislaus and , and Karl's sons, Emil and Hugo (1864-1918). He received his first lessons at his father's studio in Bad Kreuznach. From 1851 to 1856, he studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Wilhelm von Schadow and Karl Ferdinand Sohn.
