Elvira Ríos
María Elvira Gallegos Ríos (November 16, 1913 – January 13, 1987) was a Mexican singer and actress. One of the most notable performers of Agustín Lara's songs, Ríos was the first Mexican singer who achieved international success through radio, records, nightclub engagements, tours, and films. She was well known in Mexico, United States, Brazil, Argentina, and France, among other countries. Some of her greatest hits are " Noche de ronda", " Flores negras", "Perfidia", "Desesperadamente", and "Ausencia". Birth and family Ríos was born on November 16, 1913, in La Lagunilla, a neighborhood of central Mexico City. ''Stagecoach'' is a 1939 American Western film directed by John Ford and starring Claire Trevor and John Wayne. The screenplay by Dudley Nichols is an adaptation of "The Stage to Lordsburg", a 1937 short story by Ernest Haycox. The film follows an eclectic group of travelers riding on a stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory. "Noche de ronda" is a waltz written by Mexican songwriter and composer Agustín Lara and published in 1935. Mexican singer Elvira Ríos sang the song in the 1937 film ''¡Esos hombres!''. It became her signature song and one of the biggest hits of her career. La Martinique was a popular nightclub in New York City, United States during the 1940s. Situated in a basement at 57 West 57th Street, the club was owned and operated by Dario Goldfarb and Jim Vernon. It was at La Martinique that Mr. & Mrs. Walt Disney would host the after party following the October 23, 1941 premiere of ''Dumbo'' at the Broadway theatre. The club is remembered for launching the careers of many singers of the era, including Dick Haymes, Danny Kaye, Jackie Miles, Sunny Skylar, and Zero Mostel, as well as playing host to more established performers, such as Jo Stafford who had a six-month residency there beginning in February 1945.
