Arthur Elvin
Sir Arthur 'Ginger' Elvin (5 July 1899 in Norwich, EnglandJacobs, N & Lipscombe, P (2005). ''Wembley Speedway : The Pre-War Years''. Stroud: Tempus Publishing – 4 February 1957) was a British businessman who was best known as the owner and operator of Wembley Stadium, London. The son of a Norwich policeman, he was born in Magpie Road, Norwich. Elvin left school at the age of fourteen. After a few different jobs, including as a soap salesman in Aldgate, he joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) during the First World War, aged 17 . Flying as an observer Elvin was shot down over France and was held as a prisoner of war for two years, despite at least one escape attempt. He later said that one of the reasons for his recapture was that he could not swim, and that this had made him determined to construct a public swimming pool. After the war Elvin was employed by the Ministry of Munitions to salvage the metal in artillery shells in France, supervising, in his words, "hundreds of ... Herbert Henry Elvin
Herbert Henry Elvin (18 July 1874 – 10 November 1949) was a British people, British trade unionist. Born in Eckington, Derbyshire, Elvin left school at the age of 14,''Report of the 49th Annual Conference'', Labour Party (UK), Labour Party, p.38 although he later studied with the Queen Mary, University of London, People's Palace, Birkbeck College and the London Guildhall University, City of London College.''The Labour Who's Who'' (1927), p.64 He became a preacher at the age of fifteen, and spent seven years in India. Elvin joined the National Union of Clerks in 1894, and became a prominent figure, holding the post of honorary secretary from 1906, then general secretary from 1909, serving until 1941. He was elected to the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in 1925, and served as President of the TUC in 1938. Lionel Elvin
Herbert Lionel Elvin (7 August 1905 in Buckhurst Hill – 14 June 2005 in Cambridge) was an educationist. Elvin was the son of Herbert Henry Elvin, General Secretary of the National Union of Clerks, and brother of George, who became General Secretary of the Association of Cinematograph Television and Allied Technicians. He studied at Southend High School for Boys, for which he wrote the lyrics for the school song, and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he achieved first class honours in English and History. He was also President of the Cambridge Union Society and an accomplished athlete, representing Cambridge in the half-mile against Oxford in 1927. After a two-year Commonwealth Fund Fellowship at Yale, Elvin returned to Trinity Hall in 1930 as the college's first Fellow with responsibility for teaching English (he was tutor to both Marshall McLuhan and Raymond Williams while he was there). Mark Elvin
John Mark Dutton Elvin (born 1938) is a professor emeritus of Chinese history at Australian National University, specializing in the late imperial period; he is also emeritus fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford. Early life Elvin, the only child of Lionel Elvin and Mona Bedortha Dutton, grew up in Cambridge; attended The Dragon School; and matriculated as an undergraduate at King's College, Cambridge. He held posts at the University of Glasgow and at St, Antony's College, Oxford. Career He is noted for his high-level equilibrium trap theory to explain why an Industrial Revolution happened in Europe but not in China, despite the fact that the state of scientific knowledge was far more advanced in China much earlier than in Europe. Elvin is an event routing service using a Publish subscribe, publish/subscribe event delivery model. It was developed at the Distributed Systems Technology Centre, an Australian co-operative research centre at the University of Queensland that operated from 1992 until mid-2006. The Elvin publish subscribe model Elvin is most distinguished from other such systems by its support of a sophisticated content-based subscription system.
